Position Summary
The UHN Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) is a joint initiative with Ontario Health and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). This program provides eligible SPEP nurse learners with the chance to demonstrate their proficiency in entry-to-practice nursing skills and competencies, in accordance with the CNO Entry-to-Practice Competencies. It enables learners to apply their nursing knowledge, skills, and judgment and become familiar with the Ontario healthcare practice environment and culture. They gain experience working with patients from diverse backgrounds, ages, and health conditions. Throughout the program, nurse learners receive support, guidance, and feedback from dedicated preceptors and Advanced Practice Nurse Educators to ensure their success.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, eligible SPEP nursing learners will practice under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a Registered Health Professional within the care environment on each unit. SPEP nursing learners will be hired on a contract basis, working full-time hours of 37.5 hours per week. The scheduling of these hours will be based on the unit's needs and may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts.
Duties
Responsible and accountable for providing patient care under the supervision of an assigned nurse preceptor, in accordance with organizational policies and professional standards, while adhering to the limitations of the position.
Collaborates with the preceptor to ensure the nurse learner acquires the knowledge, skills, and judgment needed to perform tasks such as physical assessments, medication administration, nursing interventions, and assistance with activities of daily living, ensuring the patient’s needs and comfort are met.
Engages with interdisciplinary teams and individual team members as appropriate.
Requests assistance with assigned duties as needed and informs team members of any changes or concerns regarding the patient’s condition.
Reports for all assigned shifts or notifies the Manager of any absences prior to the start of the shift.
Maintains confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Maintains satisfactory performance and attendance.
Evidence of eligibility in the Supervised Practice Experience Partnership as found on CNO Registration Portal
Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification required
Flexibility with respect to work schedule
Flexible and able to work effectively and efficiently within an interdisciplinary patient care team
Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position
Excellent interpersonal, communication and decision-making skills
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Proficient computer skills and comfortable learning new systems
