About the role

WHO WE ARE
Smooth Path Investing (SPI) is building RAs (Regime Adaptive System), a proprietary AI system
for finance and active portfolio management. Eyeland Capital Management (ECM) is the
associated hedge fund and investment-management entity. Both ventures are currently operating
in stealth mode.
The underlying investment process has already been tested in real-world trading activity:
ECM’s investment approach has been applied across approximately $240 million of underlying
buying and selling activity over three years.
RAs is now at the prototype/beta stage, with a working interface and a highly modular architecture.
The objective is to complete the development required to bring the system to launch.
WHAT WE ARE BUILDING
RAs is designed around two fundamental problems in finance:
1. Active portfolio management after stock selection.
“‘ RAs is not intended to replace the stock-selection process. Instead, it focuses on what happens
after a stock has been selected or is already being considered for a portfolio: distilled
into what trading actions should be taken.
2. Open-ended financial reasoning within a deterministic architecture.
RAs is designed to transform unlimited open-ended finance and economics questions into
structured stock trading outputs.
Conceptually, the system is intended to be something like a “Cursor for stock trading”:
where the underlying complexity is structured so AI can work within it without losing the logic.
RAs applies an analogous principle to finance: an open-ended financial/economic question
is converted into a structured, deterministic trading/portfolio representation, including the
relevant ticker(s), comparisons, and implications. “‘
THE CORE MOAT
The central architectural distinction is the decoupling of market prediction from trading decisions.
RAs is designed to use prediction as an input to a broader decision architecture rather than
treating prediction itself as the trading decision.
This separation is fundamental to how we are building the system and is intended to allow the
analytical and predictive components to evolve independently from the portfolio-management and
trading-decision layer.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for 2–3 strong technical people to partner with us and complete the RAs development
required for launch.
We are particularly interested in people with backgrounds in:
• Quantitative finance / financial engineering
• Machine learning / artificial intelligence
• Mathematical modeling / applied mathematics
• Software engineering / systems architecture
• Computational finance
The most important requirement is not a particular degree or technology. It is the ability to
understand and take ownership of a large, modular codebase and contribute to the underlying
architecture rather than simply completing isolated coding tasks.
HOW WE WORK
This is a partnership opportunity, not a salaried position.
There is no salary at this stage. In return, the right people would receive meaningful ownership
associated with their contribution and the opportunity to build a system from an existing working
foundation.
We expect partners to:
• Understand the code and architecture they work on deeply.
• Own what they build.
• Use AI coding tools where appropriate, but not rely on AI to understand the work for them.
• Extend the existing architecture rather than unnecessarily rebuilding it.
• Work independently and move quickly.
One important principle: when a component is completed, the person who built it should first
be able to explain the architecture, logic, implementation, and implications directly in a meeting.
We are not looking for an AI-generated documentation file to substitute for understanding the work.
THE OBJECTIVE
The objective is straightforward:
Complete the RAs development required for launch within approximately three months.
We already have the underlying research (unpublished academic papers), architecture (40, 000
lines of code), prototype (functioning system that captures the two main points discussed at the
beginning of this post), and 20 years of investment-management experience. The opportunity is
to work with us to turn the existing system into a launch-ready product.
INTERESTED?
If you are a strong technical builder who is interested in taking ownership of a difficult finance/AI
system rather than simply taking another internship or salaried development role, send a short
note describing your background and what you believe you could contribute.
