Senior Backend Engineer

ABOUT THE ROLE
You will join a European fintech startup building trust infrastructure as a Backend Engineer. You will design scalable systems that power high trust workflows and work closely with the engineering team to shape technical culture and long term architecture.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design and implement clean, testable backend systems and APIs.
- Architect scalable infrastructure capable of handling high trust requirements.
- Champion testing, quality, and long term maintainability in every project.
- Think deeply about user needs and system behavior to tackle complex problems.
- Collaborate to shape engineering practices and contribute to technical direction.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience with production systems.
- Strong systems thinking and ability to reason about long term architecture.
- Clear communicator who collaborates well with teammates.
- Ability to learn quickly and work effectively in ambiguity with kindness and curiosity.
- Experience with one or more backend languages such as Node.js or TypeScript, Python, Go, or Java, and familiarity with building production systems.
- Experience designing scalable APIs and backend infrastructure for high volumes or high trust environments.
- Production experience with relational databases, automated testing, message queues, and containerized/cloud environments (Kubernetes, AWS, etc.).
- Background in fintech, payments, identity, or other regulated domains is a plus.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Base salary range: EUR 116,000 to 146,000 annually. The company uses a uniform leveling system with consistent pay across roles at the same level. No visa sponsorship is provided; applicants must already have the right to work in Europe.
LOCATION
Work arrangement: fully remote within European time zones. Primary location: Austria.
