Senior Software Development Engineer

About Barayamal: Barayamal supports First Nations entrepreneurs and community-led innovation. We are seeking a volunteer Senior Software Development Engineer to help guide and contribute to practical software projects, tools and digital systems that support our programs. Volunteer role terms: This is an unpaid volunteer role with no fixed minimum hours. Volunteers choose what they can reasonably contribute, and tasks are agreed around availability. This is not paid employment and does not involve fixed shifts, mandatory attendance, penalties for absence or a guaranteed volume of tasks. What you may contribute: help design, build and improve software features, backend services, web tools, APIs, integrations, testing, documentation or maintainability improvements; review code and support pragmatic technical decisions; mentor or share knowledge with other volunteers where useful; collaborate remotely with Barayamal and other volunteers on clearly scoped tasks that fit agreed availability; suggest simple, maintainable approaches that fit a non-profit, volunteer-led environment. Preferred experience: 2+ years Java, backend, web development or equivalent project experience preferred, not essential; experience with Git, APIs, databases, testing, documentation, architecture decisions or collaborative development tools is helpful; clear communication, reliability and respect for First Nations-led work; interest in social impact, Indigenous entrepreneurship or non-profit technology. Location and eligibility: This remote volunteer opportunity is for people who currently live in Australia so coordination, context and any agreed collaboration can align with Australian programs and time zones.
