About Barayamal
Barayamal supports First Nations entrepreneurship in Australia through programs, resources, mentoring and practical support.
Role overview
Barayamal is looking for a volunteer Software Engineer to help improve and maintain digital tools that support our programs and operations. This is an unpaid volunteer role with no fixed minimum hours. Volunteers choose what they can reasonably contribute, and tasks are agreed around availability. This remote volunteer opportunity is intended for people who currently live in Australia.
What you may help with
- Build and improve Java or backend features for internal tools, websites or program platforms.
- Review, debug and refactor existing code.
- Integrate APIs, databases or third-party services where needed.
- Write clear technical notes or documentation.
- Join occasional remote check-ins when mutually convenient.
- Suggest practical improvements to reliability, security and maintainability.
Preferred experience
- 2+ years Java experience or equivalent project experience preferred.
- Backend development experience with APIs, databases or cloud/deployment workflows.
- Familiarity with Git and collaborative development.
- Ability to communicate clearly and work independently on agreed tasks.
- Interest in using technology to support First Nations entrepreneurship and community impact.
Eligibility and expectations
- You currently live in Australia.
- You understand this is an unpaid volunteer role, not a paid employment position.
- There are no fixed minimum hours, required shifts, mandatory attendance requirements or penalties for absence.
- Contributions are flexible and agreed around the volunteer's availability.
- Volunteers can pause or step back if circumstances change, with reasonable notice where possible.
