Business Application Developer

At Relay, we build custom apps for small to mid-size businesses. We specialize in Airtable, a cloud-based platform for creating and navigating relational databases, though we also leverage Supabase for more technically demanding projects. We’re seeking an Application Developer to help us deliver client projects and build both the front- and back-ends of business tools.
For this role, you don't need explicit Airtable, Supabase, or Next.js experience (though it's a big plus), but you do need to understand database architecture best practices and have a keen eye for intuitive UX. Much of our application design is powered by Claude, so it's essential that you're competent using AI coding tools like Claude and Codex. That said, we're very intentional about where we don't use AI, and we're looking for a critically-thinking human with good judgment, not a Claude autopilot.
During your first month on the job, you’ll fill out your developer skillset via internal learning and development. You’ll shadow a client project and do smaller tasks until the point where you’re ready to build and design your own applications from scratch.
After the first month, you'll start adopting your long-term responsibilities:
Develop and maintain Airtable & Supabase applications that streamline project management, ERP operations, sales operations, and more.
Engineer well-structured database solutions that manage large volumes of data efficiently and securely.
Design intuitive front-end Next.js and Airtable Blocks SDK interfaces, with an emphasis on ease of use.
Ensure that Claude-architected projects are well-organized, use consistent components, and have a strong foundation.
Assist in troubleshooting and optimizing existing applications.
Migrate data from existing databases (both on and off Airtable) to our clients' new applications.
Automate communication between 3rd-party systems like QuickBooks and Slack.
We use Claude to spin up custom interface elements in Airtable using React components. We'll also use it generate lightweight front-end apps to connect to Airtable and bypass its interface layer entirely. Finally, we build full-fledged Next.js apps on top of Supabase for our largest clients. You'll need to be comfortable doing the same. We'll help with the training, but the problem should engage you from day 1.

Here are some other things that would make you stand out:
Front-end application design experience, or web design experience.
Database design and architecture experience.
Expertise in, and interest in, LLM coding tools and IDEs that integrate them (Claude Code, Codex, Git Hub Copilot, etc.).
Full-stack software development experience.
The starting salary for this role is $80,000/yr. We offer competitive healthcare benefits and 401k enrollment. You’d be coming on as our seventh employee, giving you plenty of room to grow into the role that best suits you.
