About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
At Relay, we build custom apps for small to mid-size businesses. We specialize in Airtable, a cloud-based platform for creating and navigating relational databases, though we also leverage Supabase for more technically demanding projects. We’re seeking a Product Manager to help us organize and grow our portfolio of client projects.
This role requires many hats that might be worn by several people at a larger organization. Here's a list of the hats you'll need to wear and the responsibilities you'll need to juggle:
Product Vision: you'll hear a business problem and see an application.
Product Scoping: you'll take a dream and turn it into an organized project.
Feature Building: you'll take user needs and turn them into feature specs.
Quality Assurance: you'll ensure that the features we build are bug-free to the best of our ability.
Account Management: you'll be an expert in the the accounts you work with, and they'll view you, and Relay, as an extension of their team.
For this role, you don't need explicit PM experience (though it's a big plus). During your first month on the job, you’ll fill out your PM skillset via internal learning and development. You’ll then shadow a client project and do smaller tasks until the point where you’re ready to own client relationships independently.
After the first month, you'll start adopting your long-term responsibilities:
Organize external projects into discrete milestones to ensure that projects finish on time without overburdening the team.
Prioritize inbound bugs and scope creep against the canonical project timeline to ensure that stakeholders stay happy and the team stays protected.
Provide account expertise to developers so that the features we develop are a perfect fit for the problems our clients face.
Lead weekly meetings with clients to provide product updates and gather scope.
Create spec docs and accompanying visuals for developers to articulate product vision for new pages and workflows.
Be the final UX gate for our deliverables, and prioritize an exceptional user experience with every page that leaves your hands.
We believe that smart, cooperative, and hard-working is what you should need to be to succeed, and so that’s central to our ask. As a startup, most of the time your cup will be full, but sometimes it won’t be. We might need help with other tasks that crop up (such as building internal processes). You’ll be expected to be flexible. We’d be thrilled if you’re excited to help us grow the business.
We're looking for candidates who can thrive in the details but also zoom out to see the bigger picture. This means that you have the ability to see all of a clients' needs, prioritize them, then zoom in to attack the first priority without missing a detail. Your ability to prioritize work between different clients and stakeholders will be a difference maker. If that resonates with you, let's chat!
Here are some other things that would make you stand out:
Product, account, or project management experience, particularly in a software development environment.
Startup or small-company experience.
Experience at a non-technical company. While this might seem paradoxical, we primarily work with non-technical clients across a wide range of industries, and it helps when a PM has business experience to relate to them.
Front-end application design experience, or web design experience (due to the importance we put on exceptional UI and UX).
The starting salary for this role is $80,000/yr. We offer competitive healthcare benefits and 401k enrollment. You’d be coming on as our seventh employee, giving you plenty of room to grow into the role that best suits you.
We hope to hear from you! Please be sure to submit a cover letter when applying.
Company Description
We're somewhere between a custom development shop and an operations consultancy, but we're business-first. We consider ourselves a fractional tech department. We start by discovering how a client's organization works, then build custom tools that solve their most pressing pain points. These are often small systems, like a CRM or project management tool, but they can be large, like custom ERP solutions, invoicing systems, and really anything else that makes up the backbone of a business.
A wide variety of businesses need what we make, so we find ourselves working with nonprofits, law firms, manufacturers, you name it. We even recently found ourselves working with a company that makes miniature human organs!
