NestJS Backend Developer Intern

About the Role
We are building a new rideshare platform from the ground up and are looking for a NestJS Backend Developer Intern to join our growing engineering team. This internship is designed for a student, recent graduate, or entry-level developer who wants hands-on experience working on a real-world backend system using modern technologies such as NestJS, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, TypeORM, Docker, Redis, MongoDB, and RabbitMQ.
The intern will work directly under our Senior Full Stack Engineer and will receive assigned tasks, technical guidance, code reviews, and ongoing mentorship throughout the internship. Interns will work exclusively through designated development environments, development databases, and GitHub branches. Interns will not make independent production changes or receive unrestricted production access. All code must be reviewed and approved by the Senior Full Stack Engineer before it can be merged or deployed.
This is an unpaid internship focused on practical experience, mentorship, technical development, and exposure to the engineering processes involved in building a production-focused rideshare platform.
Responsibilities
As a Backend Developer Intern, you may assist with:
Developing and maintaining backend features using NestJS and TypeScript
Building and documenting REST API endpoints
Working with PostgreSQL database entities, relationships, queries, and migrations
Assisting with the development of the platform's coupon and promotion system
Creating static and scheduled operational reports
Assisting with Change Data Capture (CDC) and database synchronization tasks
Working with separate development databases and GitHub branches
Implementing request validation, authorization, and error handling
Writing unit and integration tests for assigned features
Investigating API errors, application logs, and backend issues
Assisting with application and server monitoring
Helping create application health checks and internal alerts
Fixing assigned backend bugs
Participating in code reviews and engineering discussions
Documenting APIs, database changes, technical decisions, and completed work
Learning and following the team's development, testing, and deployment processes

Requirements
We are looking for candidates who have:
Current enrollment in, recent graduation from, or entry-level experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field
Foundational experience with Node.js and NestJS
Understanding of JavaScript and/or TypeScript
Basic knowledge of REST APIs
Familiarity with SQL and relational databases
Basic understanding of Git and GitHub workflows
Ability to understand and follow technical requirements
Willingness to receive feedback and participate in code reviews
Strong problem-solving skills
Good written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently in a remote environment
Ability to communicate progress, blockers, and questions clearly
At least one backend project, GitHub repository, academic project, freelance project, or personal project available for review

Interns are encouraged to ask questions and will not be expected to independently make architectural or production-level decisions.
Development Environment
Interns will work through designated GitHub development branches
Development will take place using non-production environments
Separate development databases will be used where appropriate
Production credentials will not be provided unless specifically required and authorized
Interns will not independently deploy code to production
All pull requests must be reviewed and approved before merging
All production-related changes must be approved by senior engineering staff

Arabic is preferred but not required
