About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
We are seeking a detail-oriented, reliable, and compassionate Immigration Paralegal to support our growing immigration practice. This is a part-time, mostly remote position with a clear path to full-time employment as the firm grows.
The position will focus primarily on family-based immigration, humanitarian matters, and naturalization. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on immigration case-preparation experience, is comfortable working directly with clients, and can independently manage case tasks while collaborating closely with the attorney on legal strategy, review, and final filing decisions.
Prior Docketwise experience is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
Prepare and organize family-based immigration filings, including adjustment of status, family petitions, consular processing matters, affidavits of support, employment authorization, advance parole, removal of conditions, and related applications.
Support humanitarian cases, which may include asylum, VAWA, U visa, T visa, SIJS, parole-related matters, and other humanitarian relief.
Assist with naturalization and citizenship matters, including preparing Form N-400 applications and organizing supporting documents.
Prepare immigration forms, filing packets, and supporting evidence using firm templates, checklists, and attorney instructions.
Review client-provided documents for completeness, identify missing information, and follow up with clients promptly and professionally.
Organize supporting evidence, including civil documents, identity documents, relationship evidence, financial records, affidavits, translations, photographs, and other case-specific materials.
Draft basic USCIS cover letters, client correspondence, document-request letters, affidavits, and other supporting materials for attorney review.
Use Docketwise to send and monitor questionnaires, prepare forms, collect and organize documents, maintain case notes, assign or track tasks, and monitor case progress and deadlines.
Maintain complete and accurate electronic case files, including consistent document naming, timely document uploads, detailed case notes, and clear task tracking.
Track case milestones and deadlines, including filing deadlines, biometrics appointments, interview dates, Requests for Evidence, Notices of Intent to Deny, work-authorization expiration dates, and other time-sensitive events.
Communicate with clients by phone, email, and firm-approved messaging platforms in a professional, compassionate, and culturally sensitive manner.
Clearly explain document requests, deadlines, and next steps to clients without providing legal advice.
Document meaningful client communications and case developments so the attorney has an accurate, current understanding of each matter.
Assist with defensive-asylum or removal-defense matters as needed, including organizing documents, preparing exhibits, drafting declarations from attorney outlines or interview notes, researching and compiling country-conditions materials, and assembling hearing packets.
Identify missing documents, possible delays, incomplete questionnaires, or other case-preparation concerns early and communicate them promptly to the attorney.
Follow firm procedures, checklists, quality-control standards, and confidentiality requirements to promote accurate, consistent, client-centered work.
Required Qualifications
Three years of experience as an immigration paralegal or similar role in an immigration law firm, nonprofit legal-services organization, or comparable setting.
Experience preparing family-based immigration, humanitarian, naturalization, or other non-employment immigration matters.
Hands-on Docketwise experience is strongly preferred. Applicants must be comfortable using Docketwise for client questionnaires, form preparation, document collection, document organization, case notes, task tracking, and case-progress monitoring.
Familiarity with USCIS forms, filing procedures, supporting-document requirements, USCIS online accounts, and case-status tracking.
Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple active cases, competing priorities, and time-sensitive deadlines.
Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills.
Strong client-service skills and the ability to interact respectfully and patiently with clients from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Comfort working primarily remotely and using Google Workspace, document-management tools, video-conferencing platforms, and secure client-communication systems.
Ability to work independently, follow established firm systems, take ownership of assigned tasks, and raise questions or concerns when appropriate.
Commitment to confidentiality, professional ethics, and appropriate boundaries in client interactions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with removal-defense or defensive-asylum matters, including declarations, country-conditions research, hearing exhibits, and EOIR filing procedures.
Experience with VAWA, U visa, T visa, SIJS, asylum, waivers, parole-related filings, or other humanitarian immigration matters.
Spanish, Korean, or fluency in another language commonly spoken by immigration clients.
Experience working with clients who have experienced trauma, family separation, domestic violence, persecution, or other sensitive circumstances.
Attributes We Value
Reliability and follow-through. You complete tasks when promised and communicate early if a deadline, workload issue, or missing information could affect progress.
A calm, practical, solution-oriented approach to client service and case preparation.
Careful attention to detail, especially when preparing forms, reviewing documents, tracking deadlines, and maintaining case records.
Curiosity and a genuine interest in developing deeper knowledge of immigration law, procedures, and best practices.
Respect for client confidentiality, personal boundaries, and the sensitive nature of immigration matters.
A low-drama, outcome-focused mindset that values responsibility, growth, professionalism, and teamwork.
