The Opportunity
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Lead Technical SEO & Web Specialist for an unpaid internship on a fully remote basis. This internship is structured in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #71 under the Fair Labor Standards Act. It offers meaningful real-world experience on a data platform of significant scale and social impact, with direct exposure to international trade data, institutional audiences, and a mission-driven organization.
What You Will Work On
You will take ownership of the technical SEO foundation of www.gticonnect.org — a WordPress-based platform with over 8,700 pages. Specific responsibilities include:
— Implementing HTML data tables below Tableau embeds on Trade Analysis pages to improve crawlability and mobile performance
— Adding Dataset JSON-LD schema markup and structured data across chapter and subheading pages
— Restructuring internal linking from the homepage to priority chapter pages to redistribute crawl equity
— Fixing render-blocking JavaScript and CSS to improve Core Web Vitals across all page types
— Managing and monitoring Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4
— Delivering a keyword architecture document to support the content strategy team
— Submitting bi-weekly progress reports to the research team
What You Bring
— Proven experience in technical SEO — WordPress development, Core Web Vitals optimization, schema markup implementation
— Hands-on knowledge of Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, and PageSpeed Insights
— Working knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML
— Experience with Screaming Frog, SEMrush, or equivalent technical SEO tools
— Strong communication habits — timely acknowledgment of correspondence and on-schedule reporting are essential
