About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Role: Product Data Scientist
Location: Remote – Vietnam
Type: Full-Time Contractor
Working time: Monday–Friday, 9 am–5 pm (AEST/AEDT)
About Us:
Automation Consulting Pty Ltd is an Australian-based AI and automation consultancy helping businesses streamline operations with smart, scalable solutions.
About Our Client
Our client is a dynamic Australian FinTech startup revolutionising payments. Their innovative platform empowers businesses with cutting-edge payment solutions, enhancing efficiency while offering valuable rewards. Launched in 2019, they've quickly become one of Australia's fastest growing fintech companies.
About the role:
We're looking for a Data Scientist to join our growing data team and work closely with our Product Pods as a strategic data partner.
You'll be embedded within Product, working alongside Product Managers, Engineers and other specialists to identify opportunities where data, analytics, machine learning & AI can create meaningful product and customer value. Rather than simply responding to requests for analysis, you'll help shape product thinking, tackle ambiguous problems and turn them into practical data-driven solutions.
A key part of the role is helping Product understand what is working, why it is working, and whether our product changes are creating measurable impact. You'll work across the full lifecycle, from exploring a problem and developing insights through to building and measuring solutions - whether that's a new customer-facing capability, hypothesis testing, an ML model embedded into our platform, or insights that help our customers make better decisions.
You'll have the support of the central Data team while having significant ownership within your Product Pod.
Key Responsibilities
Partner with Product
Embed across Product Pods and become a trusted data partner to Product Managers and Engineering.
Help shape the product roadmap by identifying opportunities and providing recommendations for new product features.
Translate ambiguous business and customer problems into clear analytical, data or ML/AI opportunities where appropriate.
Own the flow of information within your Product Pods and drive evidence-based decision-making.
Design end-to-end measurement and evaluation strategies for new products, features and initiatives.
Apply causal inference and experimentation methodologies to understand whether product changes are driving improvements in key business and customer outcomes.
Establish clear baseline metrics, hypotheses and counterfactuals for new products and features, defining how success will be measured before launch. Use A/B testing, control groups, cohort analysis and causal inference techniques where appropriate to isolate the incremental impact of product changes on customer, product and business KPIs.
Influence product decisions rather than simply responding to requests for analysis.
Build data, ML & AI solutions
Develop analytical and predictive solutions that solve real product and customer problems.
Build and evaluate Machine Learning models where they provide meaningful value.
Explore and prototype AI agents and LLM-enabled product capabilities to determine use case suitability.
Work with engineers to productionise intelligence products and data-driven capabilities within our platform.
Develop experimentation and measurement frameworks to understand whether solutions are successful.
Contribute to the Data organisation
Work as part of the broader Data team while being embedded within Product.
Help establish reusable approaches, models and analytical assets that can benefit multiple departments across the organisation.
Contribute to our data and ML practices, including experimentation, model evaluation, data quality and responsible AI.
Share learnings and best practices across the Data Science community.
What we're looking for
4 years plus experience in Data Science, Product Data Science, Applied Data Science or a similar role.
Experience working closely with Product and Engineering teams, ideally in a technology, SaaS, fintech or platform environment.
Strong analytical and statistical foundations, with the ability to move from exploratory analysis through to robust solutions.
Experience building and applying machine learning models to real-world problems.
Experience with experimentation, product analytics and measuring the impact of product changes.
Comfortable working with ambiguous problems and taking ownership from problem definition through to implementation.
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Commercially minded. You care about whether a solution creates value, not just whether the model performs well.
Curious about emerging AI capabilities and able to identify where AI/ML can genuinely improve a product or customer experience.
...
Success Criteria
Product teams actively seek you out as a strategic partner, rather than treating you as an analytics service.
You can take a vague product problem and turn it into a measurable data opportunity.
You can move comfortably between customer problem → product strategy → data → model → production → impact.
You can operate independently while knowing when to bring in Data Engineering, Analytics, Product or Engineering expertise.
What We Offer:
Competitive salary.
Supportive environment that values work-life balance.
Partnership approach ("work with us, not for us").
Laptop provided for work purposes.
Successful candidates are required to operate under their own registered business entity (e.g. household business) in Vietnam, and are responsible for their own taxes and business expenses.
Collaborative and nurturing environment.
Knowledge sharing and skill enhancement opportunities.
Respectful and inclusive team culture.
Long-term opportunity with ongoing projects and growth potential.
