About the Role
As the organization expands its national portfolio of education innovation initiatives, it is scaling a digital ecosystem that integrates systems, data, and tools to support its mission. Safeguarding the security, integrity, and trust of this ecosystem is critical to enabling impact.
The Director, IT & Security will serve as both a strategic leader and hands-on practitioner, responsible for overseeing technology platforms and cybersecurity posture. Reporting to the SVP of Technology, this role will guide IT systems management, vendor oversight, and security best practices—ensuring strong governance, resilient infrastructure, and a culture of data stewardship.
This position blends strategic leadership with tactical execution, partnering cross-functionally and with external vendors to advance technology maturity and strengthen security practices.
Key Responsibilities
IT Strategy & Systems Governance
Build and maintain a comprehensive inventory of applications, data flows, and integrations
Establish governance frameworks to identify risks, redundancies, and optimization opportunities
Evaluate and optimize the tech stack for cost efficiency, usability, and interoperability
Cybersecurity Leadership
Develop and implement security policies aligned with SOC 2 and other relevant frameworks
Oversee secure architecture across cloud, network, and applications
Lead data classification, backup, retention, and incident response strategies
Identity & Access Management
Implement scalable joiner/mover/leaver workflows
Enforce least-privilege access and role-based access control (RBAC)
Strengthen identity security and access governance
Vendor & Partner Management
Manage relationships with IT vendors and ensure SLA/DPA compliance
Partner on shared initiatives including device management, IAM, and network security
Provide advisory support to internal ventures on IT infrastructure and compliance
Risk, Compliance & Culture
Lead risk management processes including audits, assessments, and reporting
Promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness and data stewardship
Deliver training and awareness programs across the organization
Reporting & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Monitor IT and security performance metrics
Present insights, risks, and progress to leadership and board stakeholders
Partner with operations, finance, data, and program teams to embed security and privacy into initiatives
Qualifications
Required Experience & Skills
10+ years in IT operations, cybersecurity, or technology risk management
Hands-on experience with:
Identity & Access Management (IAM)
Mobile Device Management (MDM)
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
Penetration testing and security tools
Strong knowledge of compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO, or similar)
Proven ability to manage external vendors while building internal capabilities
Experience working in dynamic, fast-paced, or entrepreneurial environments

Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $140,000 – $170,000 annually (based on experience and location)

Work Environment
Fully remote role
Occasional travel required (approximately 2 times per year within the U.S.)
Standard working hours Monday–Friday, with flexibility based on workload and collaboration needs
