As a Senior Engineer on the Core Infrastructure team, you will have a deep impact across a wide variety of business and technology decisions. You will build the foundational platform—spanning Compute, Networking, and Foundations—that powers every Uber trip, delivery, and freight shipment globally. This role requires a pragmatic, high-execution mindset to build highly available, mission-critical systems that are "Secure by Design" and "Cloud-Native by Default". Whether it’s driving fleet-wide CPU efficiency, modernizing our global service mesh, or automating safe deployments, your work will directly impact Uber’s bottom line and developer velocity.
What You’ll Do
Design and scale the next generation of core infrastructure services (Compute, Networking, or Tooling) capable of supporting millions of sustained concurrent trips.
Drive efficiency and optimization through large-scale initiatives, targeting 40%+ fleet utilization and optimizing unit costs across multi-cloud and on-prem environments.
Enable multi-cloud resilience by developing features that support our "Thrive in Cloud" strategy, ensuring seamless failover and active-active reliability across providers.
Automate the lifecycle by building "AIOps" and agentic automation tools to reduce manual operational load, automate incident response, and triage alerts.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Storage, Data, and Product teams to ensure infrastructure seamlessly enables business growth and scales for complex AI/ML workloads.
Mentor and execute by leading by example, shipping high-quality code with rigorous testing, and providing technical mentorship to help mid-level engineers grow.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
5+ years of software engineering experience, with a focus on backend services, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
Strong proficiency in systems languages such as Go, Java, or C++.
Proven track record of building, deploying, and operating production services that handle high throughput and require 99.99% availability.
Ability to debug complex issues across a distributed stack, from application code down to the networking or container layer.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with the modern CNCF ecosystem, including Kubernetes, Envoy, or Prometheus.
Experience in performance tuning, capacity planning, or cost-optimization of large-scale clusters.
Experience architecting services that run across hybrid/multi-cloud environments (AWS/GCP) and familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., GitOps).
Knowledge of Zero-Trust architecture, mTLS, and building ransomware-resilient systems.
Experience leading technical projects from conception to launch, influencing team roadmaps and technical standards.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $202,000 per year - USD $224,000 per year.
For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $202,000 per year - USD $224,000 per year.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $202,000 per year - USD $224,000 per year.
For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
