Privacy Counsel (Contract)
Location: Remote (United States)
Hours: 40 hours per week
Duration: Approximately 2 months (October 12, 2026 – December 31, 2026)
Compensation: $105–$120/hour
Overview
Legal.io is seeking an experienced Privacy Counsel to support the legal team of a leading global consumer and transportation company on a full-time contract engagement.
This role will provide day-to-day legal guidance on a broad range of privacy matters, including commercial contracting, product counseling, regulatory compliance, incident response, and emerging technologies. The successful candidate will partner closely with Legal, Security, Product, Marketing, Technology, and Compliance teams to help the business navigate evolving privacy requirements while enabling innovation.
The ideal candidate has significant experience advising on U.S. and global privacy laws and enjoys working at the intersection of technology, data governance, and commercial operations.
Key Responsibilities
Review and negotiate privacy provisions in commercial agreements, vendor contracts, and data processing agreements (DPAs)
Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) for new and evolving products, services, technologies, and business processes
Advise business stakeholders on consent management, opt-out requirements, and privacy governance frameworks
Provide legal guidance on consumer and data subject rights requests, including escalated privacy inquiries
Support privacy incident response efforts, including breach assessments and notification analysis
Partner with cross-functional teams on enterprise data mapping and data governance initiatives
Advise on privacy issues involving digital advertising, ad tech, cookies, tracking technologies, transparency, consent, and cross-border data use
Counsel stakeholders on emerging privacy issues involving artificial intelligence, automated decision-making, biometrics, geolocation, children’s privacy, and sensitive personal information
Identify legal risks and provide practical, business-oriented recommendations that balance compliance with operational objectives
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar
7+ years of legal experience focused on privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, or technology law
Significant experience advising on commercial privacy matters and data processing agreements
Strong understanding of U.S. and international privacy laws, including GDPR and U.S. state privacy laws
Experience conducting privacy impact assessments and advising on privacy-by-design principles
Familiarity with incident response, breach notification, and privacy regulatory obligations
Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills
Ability to independently manage complex privacy matters in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment
Preferred Experience
Prior in-house experience supporting technology, consumer, transportation, or highly regulated organizations
Experience advising on digital marketing, ad tech, cookies, consent management, and online tracking technologies
Familiarity with AI governance, automated decision-making, biometrics, geolocation data, and children’s privacy requirements
Experience supporting enterprise privacy programs and cross-functional compliance initiatives
