Qiki builds the point-of-sale and payments platform that thousands of Australian hospitality venues run on - cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs. Ten years in, we own the whole stack: the app, the hardware, the backend and the merchant relationship.
When a venue opens in the morning, ours is the system they trade on all day.
About the Role
We are growing our engineering team and adding a senior Android developer to it. Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, MVVM and Clean Architecture, Coroutines and Flow, Room, Retrofit/Ktor, against NestJS backend APIs. You will work closely with our POS product owner, who knows this product end to end, and with our backend engineer on the API side. You will be working alongside people who built this product and still work on it, so you will not be inheriting it cold.
You will have real input into what gets built and a direct line to the people who set priorities. We move quickly, but anything that touches payments goes through proper review before it reaches a venue. Senior level, with a clear path to Android Lead as the team grows. We would rather someone earned that here than arrived with the title.
Responsibilities
WHY THIS ISN'T A NORMAL ANDROID JOB
Your code runs on physical hardware in a live trading environment:
Dual-screen POS units with a customer-facing display
EFTPOS payment terminals
Bluetooth receipt printers
Handhelds used on the floor during service
Offline-first ordering that keeps working when a venue's internet drops mid-service
We provide the full hardware kit - terminals, printers, a POS unit - so you are testing against the same devices a venue uses, not an emulator and a hopeful assumption. Most Android developers never get to hold the thing their code runs on.
Thousands of venues trust us with their busiest hours. That trust is the product, and everything we build is judged on whether it holds up when a venue is three deep at the counter - not on whether it demos well.
THE ROLE
Work closely with our POS product owner and backend engineer on the API side.
Collaborate with people who built this product and still work on it.
Have real input into what gets built and a direct line to the people who set priorities.
Ensure anything that touches payments goes through proper review before it reaches a venue.
Operate at a senior level with a clear path to Android Lead as the team grows.
ONE THING WE'LL BE STRAIGHT ABOUT
This is not greenfield and we are not rewriting. The app is in production and it processes transactions. The job is to carry it forward inside the architecture that is already there - improving it deliberately, not replacing it.
If your instinct on inheriting a codebase is to start again, this is not the role for you. If you have ever modernised something while it was live, without breaking it, you will know exactly what we are after.
HOW WE READ APPLICATIONS
We rank on verifiable POS, payments and hardware experience.
If you have worked on EFTPOS integration, terminal software, BLE peripherals or anything that moves money on a device, name the product and your actual role on it. Those applications go to the top of the pile.
We check what we are told, so name real products and real work.
If your payments experience is adjacent rather than direct, say that too - we would rather read an honest gap than a stretched claim, and being straight about it counts in your favour here.
Qualifications
Based in Australia with full working rights.
Required Skills
Strong production Kotlin and Jetpack Compose - shipped and maintained, not "familiar with"
POS, payments, EFTPOS terminal or fintech experience
Hardware or device SDK integration: BLE, printers, scanners, terminals, scales
A track record of picking up an existing production codebase and making it better
Offline-first work - sync, retries, conflict handling
Preferred Skills
Linkly, PAX, eftpos terminal or similar terminal experience
Hospitality or retail domain knowledge
Android CI/CD
Pay range and compensation package
THE ARRANGEMENT
Full time and permanent, remote anywhere in Australia.
If you are in Melbourne that is a bonus - you can come into the office when it suits and the hardware is easier to get your hands on.
Salary is negotiable for the right person. If you have genuine POS or payments depth, tell us what you are looking for - we would rather have that conversation properly than miss each other over a number.
