Position Overview:
The Cost Estimator will be responsible for developing accurate and reliable product and manufacturing cost estimates. The role will focus on material costing, product costing, BOM, manufacturing process costing, labour, machine cost, wastage, utilities, overheads, standard versus actual cost analysis and cost optimization.
The position requires a combination of business understanding, technical knowledge, financial awareness, and strong analytical capability to support cost-effective product and manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Product Costing
Prepare detailed costing for power cables based on approved designs, specifications and BOMs.
Calculate material consumption, wastage and yield for copper, aluminium, insulation, screens, fillers, armour, sheathing and other components.
Calculate product cost on metre, kilometre and batch basis.
Maintain and update standard product costs based on approved material prices.
Review costing for new and modified cable products.
2. Manufacturing Costing
Develop process-wise manufacturing costs for drawing, stranding, compaction, insulation, screening, cabling, armouring and sheathing.
Calculate machine-hour rates, labour, utilities, consumables, tooling and manufacturing overheads.
Establish and maintain standard process times and cost parameters.
Analyse manufacturing processes and identify key cost drivers.
3. BOM, Routing & ERP
Prepare and maintain accurate BOMs, manufacturing routings and costing data.
Coordinate with Design, Engineering and Production to validate product structures and manufacturing requirements.
Review standard BOM consumption against actual production consumption.
Maintain costing-related master data and revisions in ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics.
4. Cost Analysis & Control
Analyse Standard Cost vs. Actual Cost after production.
Identify material, labour, machine, scrap, utility and overhead variances.
Investigate significant cost deviations and identify root causes.
Coordinate with Production, Procurement, Stores and Finance for corrective actions.
Prepare periodic product costing and variance reports.
5. Cost Optimisation
Identify opportunities for material and manufacturing cost reduction.
Support Design-to-Cost and Value Engineering initiatives.
Evaluate alternative materials, designs and manufacturing processes.
Improve material yield, reduce scrap and optimise machine utilisation.
Track and quantify savings from approved cost-reduction initiatives.
Ensure cost optimisation does not compromise product quality or applicable standards.
6. New Product & Process Costing
Prepare preliminary and detailed costing for new cable products.
Support Engineering and Production during product development and trials.
Compare estimated cost with actual trial-production cost.
Assess the cost impact of design, material and process changes.
Update standard costing based on validated production data.
7. Costing Systems & Process Improvement
Develop and maintain standard costing templates, models and processes.
Maintain historical cost data and costing benchmarks.
Improve costing accuracy, consistency and turnaround time.
Review actual procurement and production costs against standard estimates.
Identify opportunities to improve the costing methodology and systems.
8. Cross-Functional Coordination
Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external business partners, including Design & Engineering, Production, Procurement, Quality, Finance, suppliers, vendors, and contract manufacturers
Provide costing inputs for product development, pricing and profitability analysis.
Communicate cost assumptions, variances and recommendations to management.
Take ownership of assigned costing activities and deliver within agreed timelines.
Guide junior team members in costing activities, where applicable.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in electrical / supply chain management/ economics/ finance/ operations/ engineering, or a related area.
Minimum of 3 to 8 years work experience in cost estimation, product costing, manufacturing costing, purchasing management, buying, or commodity management.
Experience in power cables, wires & cables, electrical equipment or related manufacturing industries preferred.
Strong hands-on experience in BOM costing, material consumption, process costing, machine-hour rates, wastage/yield and manufacturing overheads.
Experience in Standard Cost vs. Actual Cost analysis, cost variance and cost optimisation.
Working knowledge of ERP systems such as SAP / Oracle / Microsoft Dynamics and advanced MS projects.
Experience in new product costing, product development and manufacturing cost analysis will be an advantage.
Independently managing costing activities and coordinating with cross-functional teams is preferred.
CMA / ICWA with relevant manufacturing-costing experience is added advantage.
Minimum Travel required based on Business requirement
Key Competencies
Industry Knowledge: Understanding of cable construction, materials and manufacturing processes.
Costing: Strong knowledge of BOM, material consumption, process costing, wastage, labour and overheads.
Manufacturing: Understanding of cable manufacturing processes and production economics.
ERP: Experience with SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics or similar ERP systems.
Analytical Skills: Ability to analyse cost variances and identify cost drivers.
Cost Optimisation: Ability to identify practical material and process cost-reduction opportunities.
Commercial Awareness: Understanding of material pricing, procurement costs and product profitability.
Coordination: Effective communication with cross-functional teams.
Ownership: Accuracy, accountability, timely delivery and continuous improvement.
