MLS professionals rotate through all departments to maintain competency across the lab, working within a strong team dynamic that fosters close collaboration with healthcare providers, including ER and outpatient teams. Perform Laboratory Testing – Execute routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunological, microscopic, and bacteriological test procedures on laboratory specimens using manual techniques and automated instruments. Your work directly impacts patient diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
Apply Clinical Judgment – Evaluate instrument performance and quality control results, connect findings to disease states, and identify root causes of unexpected results. Collaborate with leadership to develop solutions and improve laboratory processes.
Maintain Laboratory Equipment – Perform calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting on laboratory equipment and information systems. Upon successful competency testing, process, test, and report results independently.
Ensure Quality and Compliance – Follow departmental and institutional policies regarding compliance, quality, safety, environmental standards, and infection control. Participate in quality assessment activities, proficiency testing, competency assessments, and quality improvement initiatives to maintain inspection readiness and enhance processes.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Coursework must align with duties of the specific section Medical Laboratory discipline position and meet the education Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist listed on the ASCP website at (ascp.org)
OR possesses a categorical scientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB
OR has met the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications. Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.
Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions are required.
Certification at the technologist, or medical/clinical lab scientist level from a nationally recognized agency, such as ASCP, AMT, ASM, AAB, AABB, ACS, or HEW is preferred.
