Summary
Historic New England offers internships all three semesters each year: fall, spring, and summer. The number and type of internships will vary depending on the projects available. This webpage and the application form will be updated each semester to indicate which internships are available.
Spring 2027 Internship Options
Climate Action (Remote): The Historic New England climate action intern will learn how to apply sustainability and climate action concepts to the work of a cultural institution. The work will directly support Historic New England’s organizational climate action goals in the areas of mitigation, resilience, and climate justice. This work may include projects focused on emissions tracking, researching decarbonization options, climate risk assessments, resilience planning, and development of sustainability policies.
Collections Exhibitions (In-Person): The Exhibitions Intern will contribute to Historic New England’s current and upcoming exhibitions, including assisting with the logistics and implementation of the bilingual Food Stories exhibition, opening in fall 2027. Projects may include rights and reproductions, and helping to implement online exhibition content and wireframe interactive elements. For the Spring 2027 internship, a working knowledge of Spanish would be a plus.
Collections Management (In-Person): The Collections Management Intern will gain hands-on experience in museum collections management and registration while working with Historic New England’s collections and historic properties. Projects may include researching, cataloguing, inventorying, and rehousing collections, as well as participating in preventive collections care activities with the Collections team.
Environmental Data (Remote): The Environmental Data Intern will explore how museums collect, manage, and use environmental information to support the care of historic properties and collections. The intern will work with data sources such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) reports, HOBO environmental monitoring data, and weather information while examining the challenges of combining these resources into useful and shareable formats. An interest in data management and organization is encouraged.
History and Botany (In-Person): The History and Botany Intern will explore the relationship between people, plants, and place at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Massachusetts. Using archival resources and materials at the property, the intern will research the site’s collections and horticultural history and contribute to the development of an online resource while gaining exposure to the history and practice of greenhouse plant care.
History Communication (Remote): The History Communications Intern will help translate Historic New England’s historical, museum, archival, and historic preservation research and expertise for broad public audiences. Depending on organizational needs, the intern may contribute to blog posts, the member magazine, social media, emails and newsletters, event materials, and other communications while exploring engaging ways to connect audiences with Historic New England’s work.
Library & Archives (In-Person): The Library & Archives Intern will gain hands-on experience in archival and special collections work at Historic New England’s Library and Archives and Center for Preservation and Collections. Projects may include archival arrangement and description, cataloguing, inventory, research, rehousing collections, light reference work, and other collections management activities.
Marketing Data & Digital Strategy (Remote): The Marketing Data & Digital Strategy Intern will support the Marketing & Communications team in using data to better understand audience engagement and measure marketing performance. The intern will analyze data across website, email, social media, membership, and other digital channels and assist with developing key performance indicators, reporting tools, and Historic New England’s integrated Marketing Performance Dashboard. This internship offers hands-on experience in marketing analytics, digital strategy, data visualization, and using data to support organizational decision-making.
Membership & Development (Remote): The Membership & Development Intern will gain experience in the role of membership and philanthropy within a nonprofit cultural organization. The intern will assist with membership and gift fulfillment, support the planning and execution of Development and member events, and gain experience using Historic New England’s Tessitura CRM while collaborating across departments.
Museum Operations (Remote): The Museum Operations Intern will support the operations and programming at the Rocky Hill Meeting House in Amesbury, MA. The intern will read through the newly digitized Rocky Hill Meeting House records to help inform and enhance our tour. Other projects related to museum interpretation may be available and customizable to the intern’s educational goals.
Research (Remote): The Research Intern will conduct primary and secondary historical and archival research to support the research agenda of the Study Center and Recovering New England’s Voices. They will learn how to transition their research into a product for museum visitors such as an in person or digital tour, public program, web content, etc.
Stopping Stones (Remote): The Stopping Stones Intern will conduct research on national projects related to the history of enslavement in support of Stopping Stones, a program that works with local partners to honor the memories of enslaved individuals in the locations where they were held. The intern will also organize genealogical data, transcribe historical records, and contribute to public-facing research.
Witness Stones (Remote): The Witness Stones Intern will support projects that restore the history and honor the humanity of enslaved persons through research and educational resources. Projects may include locating, cataloguing, and transcribing primary documents for classroom use and contributing materials to the program’s public-facing website database.

Compensation: $16/hour
Duration: Spring 2027 (130 hours)
Schedule: PT (10 hours/week)

Requirements
Residency in a New England state (ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, or VT) during the internship tenure
This is a requirement for all internship positions including remote internships.
Ability to attend the in-person internship orientation at our collections facility in Haverhill, MA on Monday, January 18, 2027 from noon-3:30pm EST.
Enrollment in a college/university program or have graduated within 24-months of the start of the internship
