Valar Ecom builds and operates a portfolio of Shopify apps for e-commerce merchants — subscription management, retention, automation, analytics, and more. Some are live in production with paying merchants; others are in active development.
We're a small, high-ownership engineering team. You won't be assigned to one narrow slice — you'll rotate across apps, own features end-to-end, and help decide how each product evolves.
The Story — Why This Role Matters
You'll work across a portfolio, not one product. Different apps, different merchants, shared foundations. You'll see more of the Shopify ecosystem in a year than most engineers see in three.
You'll be trusted to make architectural calls. Schema design, queue strategy, webhook reliability, billing edge cases — these are decisions we make together, not handed down.
You'll ship weekly. Small team, no ceremony debt. Every merge goes to production merchants within days.
Scale is the theme, not maintenance. We're moving from "it works for the first cohort" to "it works for hundreds of stores with millions of records." Query performance, background job throughput, webhook idempotency, retry semantics — this is the meat of the next 12 months.
You'll shape the roadmap. If you see a better UX, a smarter automation, a Shopify Function that could replace a webhook — pitch it. We listen.
What You'll Actually Do
Own features across the stack: Next.js pages + API routes → Prisma schema → BullMQ workers → Shopify GraphQL → third-party integrations (Klaviyo, Twilio, etc.).
Build and maintain subscription and lifecycle logic: billing attempts, retry states, recovery flows, churn tracking, reminders.
Design and evolve visual flow builders (React Flow / @xyflow) that merchants use to configure cancel journeys, discount offers, automations.
Handle Shopify webhooks reliably — idempotency, replay, ordering, HMAC verification, GDPR compliance topics.
Optimize the Postgres schema and query patterns as merchant data grows.
Improve worker throughput (BullMQ/Redis) and observability around failed jobs, dead letters, retries.
Contribute to merchant admin UIs (shadcn/Radix + Tailwind + Polaris) and customer-facing portals.
Write tests that matter (Vitest) — billing math, retry state machines, webhook handlers — not vanity coverage.
Debug production issues, read logs, own the incident.
Contribute to new Shopify apps as the portfolio grows.
Must-Have Skills
TypeScript — 2+ years, comfortable in strict mode. Our entire codebase is TS, no any sneaking in.
Next.js — Pages Router experience required, App Router a bonus. API routes, SSR, middleware.
React 18 — Solid grasp of hooks and modern state management (Zustand, Redux, or equivalent).
PostgreSQL + an ORM — Prisma preferred; TypeORM or Drizzle acceptable. Schema migrations happen weekly.
REST and GraphQL client work — Shopify Admin API is GraphQL; many integrations are REST.
Background jobs and queues — BullMQ, SQS, Sidekiq, Celery, or similar. Billing, retries, and webhooks all run out-of-band.
Git and PR discipline — Small team means high trust and a tight review loop.
Production debugging — Reading logs, reproducing incidents, writing postmortems. Merchants notice when things break.
Good-to-Have
Shopify app development — Admin API, App Bridge, Polaris, webhooks, App Proxy, billing API, Shopify Functions. If you've never touched Shopify, don't skip applying. It's onboardable in 2–3 weeks if the rest of your foundation is strong.
Redis beyond cache — Streams, pub/sub, BullMQ internals.
Klaviyo, Mailchimp, or similar ESP APIs; email template systems.
Twilio or another SMS/voice provider.
Auth0 or another identity provider (OIDC, JWT, session management).
Tailwind CSS v4 + shadcn/ui / Radix — we're already there; useful if you are too.
Vercel deployment, preview environments, edge/fluid compute mental model.
Payment/billing domain experience — dunning, proration, retries, chargebacks.
React Flow / @xyflow or any node-graph builder.
Observability tooling — Sentry, Datadog, OpenTelemetry.
What Great Looks Like After 90 Days
Shipped at least 3 merchant-visible features end-to-end.
Owned at least one incident from page to postmortem.
Made one architectural improvement (query, index, job, retry strategy) with measurable impact.
Can navigate the codebase without asking where things live.
Comfortable pairing with the lead on roadmap trade-offs.
