Backend Software Engineer — Billing & Account Management (BAM)

The Billing & Account Management (BAM) team sits within Aspire's Revenue Systems (finsys) org and owns the core billing infrastructure that underpins Aspire's revenue operations. We are looking for a backend engineer to own and evolve these high-stakes, distributed financial systems, which keep advertiser billing accounts accurate, compliant, and in sync across multiple datastores and external platforms. The role is deeply hands-on backend engineering applied to correctness-critical financial systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain backend Java/Spring Boot services, contributing feature development, bug fixes, and reliability improvements across BAM services. Solve problems around transactional consistency, event-driven correctness, notification reliability at scale, and safe multi-entity migrations for advertisers globally. Keep advertiser billing accounts accurate, compliant, and in sync across multiple datastores (MySQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB) and external platforms (Zuora). Deliver production-ready feature work and bug fixes via GitLab CI, with unit and integration test coverage meeting Jacoco gates. Strengthen system reliability through improved observability, resilience patterns, and safe canary and production deploys gated by Datadog monitors.

Requirements
Must-Have Skills:
5+ years of hands-on backend engineering with Java and Spring Boot 3, building production microservices; mid-to-senior level with demonstrated ownership of production services in a distributed-systems environment.
Experience with GraphQL, either building APIs with Netflix DGS or consuming them via the Apollo Java/Kotlin client.
Hands-on experience with event-driven, distributed systems using AWS SQS or Apache Kafka, or RabbitMQ.
Strong JPA/Hibernate and Spring Data JPA experience with MySQL/Aurora, including transactional design and optimistic locking.
Proficiency writing JUnit 5 unit tests with Mockito and integration tests against live environments.
Experience with Gradle multi-module builds. Experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
Experience with Datadog for metrics and monitors.
Responsible use of AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude) to accelerate development while maintaining code quality and correctness. Demonstrated prior experience: building or maintaining a production Spring Boot service that consumes events from SQS, Kafka, or RabbitMQ; designing idempotent event handlers; writing JPA entities and managing schema migrations against a production MySQL/Aurora database; integrating with an external REST or SDK-based third-party platform; and setting up or working with Datadog monitors as deploy quality gates in a CI/CD pipeline.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
Prior experience in the Billing or Payments domain.
Experience with DynamoDB (AWS SDK v2) and/or MongoDB (Spring Data) in a multi-store architecture. Netflix DGS.
