ABOUT THE ROLE
This is an end-to-end ownership role for the patient-facing AI conversation loop at a healthtech marketplace that helps patients access affordable international medical care. You will sit at the intersection of infrastructure and empathy, building robust agent systems that directly improve real patient outcomes on a small, senior team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Diagnose why AI conversations with patients fail and ship code fixes to prevent recurrence.
- Build and maintain agent infrastructure including tool integrations, evaluation frameworks, and retrieval systems.
- Automate recurring manual workflows on the clinic side, eliminating toil through code.
- Handle patient-facing situations with empathy when the AI falls short, turning those moments into product insights.
- Own systems end-to-end with minimal oversight, making architectural and implementation decisions independently.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 2+ years of demonstrated experience building and shipping LLM or agent systems end-to-end; professional experience, personal projects, research, or open-source all count equally.
- Hands-on experience with agent infrastructure: evals, RAG/retrieval, and tool integrations.
- Proficiency in Python or an equivalent systems programming language.
- Strong computer science and mathematics fundamentals; elite academic signals such as top-tier university education, published research, or math competition experience are a strong plus.
- A track record of diagnosing and fixing failures in production LLM or agent systems.
- Automation instinct: you spot recurring manual workflows and proactively eliminate them through code.
- Patient-facing warmth and empathy, with the ability to handle difficult conversations with care.
- Comfort working with startup-level autonomy in a low-structure environment.
- Familiarity with prompt engineering, fine-tuning, model evaluation, vector databases, or semantic search is a plus.
- Experience with patient-facing or healthcare AI systems is a plus.
- Existing US work authorization required; visa sponsorship is not available.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary range: $150,000 to $220,000 USD annually. Visa sponsorship is not available.
LOCATION
Full-time, on-site in San Francisco, California, five days per week.
