Payroll Tax Lead
We are seeking an experienced tax manager to take ownership of a payroll service bureau tax department.
This is a working leadership role where you will be actively involved in the day to day functions such as payroll tax filings, payments, reconciliations, agency notices, research, and issue resolution while providing direction and oversight.
What You’ll Do
Lead the day-to-day payroll tax function while remaining actively involved in tax processing, research, reconciliation, and issue resolution.
Prepare, review, and ensure timely completion of federal, state, and local payroll tax payments and filings across multiple jurisdictions.
Reconcile company- and employee-level tax banking transactions and payroll tax liabilities and research and resolve variances.
Serve as the primary escalation point for complex payroll tax issues and discrepancies.
Research and respond to federal, state, and local agency notices and correspondence.
Communicate directly with tax agencies to research and resolve account and filing issues.
Provide direction, support, and knowledge-sharing within the tax team.
Review tax related segments of new client implementations, including payroll history, tax setup, balancing, and transfer of tax liabilities.
State and local tax registrations, TPA access and related account maintenance.
Monitor changes in payroll tax laws, regulations, and agency requirements and ensure our processes remain compliant.
Process and research client payroll bank returns.
Handle daily ACH bank file processes.
What We’re Looking For
4+ years of payroll tax, payroll accounting, or related experience.
Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax requirements.
Hands-on experience with multi-state payroll taxation.
Experience preparing and reconciling payroll tax filings and payments.
Experience researching tax notices and working directly with government agencies.
Strong analytical, reconciliation, investigative, and troubleshooting skills.
High technical aptitude and comfort working across multiple software platforms and government agency websites.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
Ability to provide leadership and direction while remaining an active member of the day-to-day team.
