Commercial Building Energy & Performance Engineer
The Commercial Building Energy & Performance Engineer provides technical consulting services focused on the energy performance, operation, and sustainability of commercial, institutional, municipal, and multifamily buildings.
This position performs commercial building energy audits, building performance evaluations, utility benchmarking, energy modeling, and building systems analysis. The Engineer evaluates existing building systems and controls, analyzes energy and utility performance, identifies energy and water conservation opportunities, and develops practical recommendations that help clients reduce operating costs, improve building performance, and support sustainability and decarbonization goals.
The role is highly field-oriented and client-facing, requiring regular travel to client properties to investigate building systems, collect field data, interview facility personnel, analyze building and utility information, and prepare clear, technically sound reports.
This position is focused on existing commercial buildings. Candidates whose experience is limited to residential energy audits, home energy assessments, residential construction, or residential energy efficiency programs will not meet the experience requirements.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Commercial Building Energy & Performance
Perform ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits for commercial, institutional, municipal, and multifamily buildings.
Conduct on-site investigations of existing building systems, operating conditions, equipment, controls, and energy-consuming systems.
Evaluate HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, building envelope, controls, and other building systems for energy performance and operational efficiency.
Perform diagnostic evaluations of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) and identify opportunities to improve system operation.
Analyze historical utility consumption, demand, operating conditions, and building performance data.
Perform utility benchmarking using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and other applicable benchmarking tools.
Identify energy and water conservation measures and develop calculations for projected savings, implementation costs, payback, and return on investment.
Develop recommendations supporting building decarbonization, sustainability, carbon reduction, ESG, and Net Zero initiatives.
Perform building energy modeling using eQUEST, DesignBuilder, TREAT, Trane TRACE, Wrightsoft, RemRate, or comparable software.
Prepare Statements of Energy Performance, utility allowance studies, carbon benchmarking analyses, and related building performance analyses.
Review existing energy studies, commissioning reports, benchmarking data, building documentation, and other technical information to identify performance improvement opportunities.
Assess the condition and operational performance of major energy-consuming building systems and identify opportunities for repair, replacement, optimization, or improved controls.
Data Analysis & Recommendations
Collect and analyze field data, utility data, equipment information, operating schedules, and building performance metrics.
Develop energy savings calculations and life-cycle or financial analyses to support client decision-making.
Evaluate potential energy conservation measures and prioritize recommendations based on energy savings, cost, payback, operational impact, and client objectives.
Develop planning-level recommendations for equipment upgrades, controls optimization, energy efficiency improvements, and other building performance initiatives.
Support the development of capital improvement and energy improvement recommendations when required by project scope.
Research applicable building codes, energy standards, utility programs, incentives, and industry best practices as needed.
Reporting & Client Service
Prepare comprehensive technical reports documenting energy audit findings, building performance, system deficiencies, energy conservation measures, benchmarking results, and recommendations.
Translate technical findings into clear, practical recommendations for building owners, facility managers, and other non-technical stakeholders.
Present findings and recommendations to clients as required.
Participate in client meetings, project kickoff meetings, site visits, and technical presentations.
Collaborate with internal engineering, sustainability, commissioning, and technical teams on multidisciplinary projects.
Manage assigned project tasks, schedules, deliverables, and documentation.
Meet productivity, report quality, and client service expectations.
Travel regularly to client properties for field assessments and project work.
Maintain confidentiality of company and client information.
Follow all company policies, quality standards, SOPs, and safety requirements.
Core Qualifications & Skills
Experience evaluating existing commercial buildings and building systems.
Experience performing or supporting commercial building energy audits, preferably ASHRAE Level II or III.
Working knowledge of ASHRAE energy auditing methodologies and commercial building energy performance.
Understanding of commercial HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, building envelope, and control systems.
Experience with BAS/BEMS, building controls, or existing-building commissioning.
Experience analyzing utility consumption and building energy performance.
Experience with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, utility benchmarking, energy conservation measures, and energy savings calculations.
Experience with energy modeling software such as eQUEST, DesignBuilder, TREAT, Trane TRACE, Wrightsoft, RemRate, or comparable platforms.
Strong analytical, technical writing, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to conduct independent field investigations and accurately document technical findings.
Ability to analyze technical information and translate findings into practical client recommendations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and applicable energy, modeling, and project management software.
Ability to operate an electronic tablet for field data collection.
Ability and willingness to travel regularly to client sites.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, Construction Management, Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related technical discipline and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant commercial building experience.
OR
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience performing commercial building energy audits, building performance evaluations, commissioning, energy consulting, building systems analysis, or related technical consulting services in lieu of a degree.

Compensation & Benefits:
Salary Range: $80,000 – $110,000
Base compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, technical expertise, geographic market, and other applicable factors.
