About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
The Follow Up is a twice-weekly newsletter for B2B salespeople and sales leaders, and we're looking for a strong journalist to take ownership of one newsletter per week.
This is not an SEO content writing job, and I'm not looking for someone to write "7 Cold Email Tips That Will Increase Your Reply Rate" or repackage tips into a generic sales article.
We write interesting stories about the world of B2B sales, talk to smart people, ask good questions, and turn what they learn into something our subscribers actually want to spend their time reading.
Think more Business Insider for B2B sales than a traditional sales blog.
For example:
- The morning routine of a CRO running a $100M sales organization.
- Interviewing the #1 sales rep at a notable company and breaking down exactly how they work
- Talking to sales leaders about whether SDR teams are becoming obsolete
-Breaking down the debate around "GTM" vs. "sales" and why everyone suddenly calls themselves a GTM leader
- Finding unusual sales strategies being used at companies people recognize
Those are just examples. A big part of the job is finding the story in the first place.
What you'll be responsible for
You would own roughly one edition of the newsletter each week (w/ opportunity to grow into more), working directly with the Founder on the topic and angle.
Depending on the story, that could involve:
- Finding B2B sales reps, managers, CROs, founders, or other sources to interview
- Conducting interviews
- Turning the interviews into entertaining stories, in The Follow Up's writing style
Who I'm looking for
The most important thing is that you can write and find interesting ideas.
You should be able to take a subject that could easily become boring corporate content and make someone interested in reading it.
Journalism experience is a major plus.
You do not need to be a B2B sales expert coming into the role.
However, if you've previously worked in sales, sold B2B, covered the sales industry, or spent time around revenue organizations, that's a big plus.
You should also be comfortable reaching out to strangers and asking them for interviews.
Very important: This cannot be AI-written
We are specifically hiring a writer because I don't want AI-generated writing.
You can use tools to help with research, transcription, organization, etc., but the reporting, thinking, story selection, and writing need to be yours.
We care a lot about voice.
Writing that feels formulaic, overly polished, corporate, or obviously AI-generated will not work for this publication.
A few instant red flags:
Constantly using constructions like "It's not about X. It's about Y."
Using em dashes every other sentence
Generic LinkedIn-style business writing
SEO-first headlines
Work arrangement
Yes
