This is a VOLUNTEER POSITION.
Dear Future is looking for a Volunteer Deputy Director who believes that every child deserves the opportunity to receive an educationand who has been looking for an opportunity to become part of something bigger than themselves.
This is not a traditional volunteer position.
We are looking for someone who wants to become deeply involved in the mission of Dear Future, learn how our organization works, share in the responsibility of keeping it moving forward, and take meaningful ownership of one of our programs or areas of work.
Our mission is simple: bring education and health to children living in extremely remote and extremely poor regions of the world.
Today, that mission takes us into communities across Africa and Latin America, where we work alongside local partners to provide school materials, address period poverty, encourage literacy, and remove barriers that keep children from receiving an education.
As Deputy Director, you would work closely with our Executive Director to help sustain and grow that work.
What This Role Looks Like
The Deputy Director will gradually develop an understanding of the entire organization—our programs, partners, fundraising, volunteers, communications, finances, and the communities we serve.
At the same time, we want to empower this person to take ownership of a program or organizational priority and move it forward.
Depending on your interests and strengths, that could mean taking a larger role in our educational materials programs, our Her Full Attention menstrual health initiative, fundraising, partner development, volunteer management, communications, or another area where your leadership can make a difference.
You will not be expected to do everything.
You will be expected to care enough to learn how everything fits together.
What You’ll Help Us Do
Work directly with the Executive Director on organizational priorities and decisions.
Learn and understand Dear Future's programs and international partnerships.
Help coordinate volunteers, project managers, and overseas partners.
Take increasing ownership of a program or major organizational initiative.
Help maintain momentum between fundraising, purchasing, distributions, reporting, and donor communications.
Participate in grassroots and relationship-based fundraising.
Build relationships with supporters, businesses, community organizations, and potential partners.
Identify opportunities to strengthen and grow Dear Future.
Help tell the stories of the children, schools, volunteers, and communities behind our work.
Become someone the organization can depend on when something needs to move forward.
Fundraising Is Part of the Role
Dear Future is an all-volunteer organization. We do not have a large development department or professional fundraising staff behind our programs.
That means organic fundraising matters.
Our programs grow because people tell our story, build relationships, introduce new supporters to the mission, ask for help, and give others a reason to care.
You do not need to arrive as an experienced professional fundraiser. But you should be willing to ask, advocate, build relationships, and help create opportunities for people to support the mission.
If you've wanted an opportunity to develop real-world fundraising skills while raising money for something tangible, this role will give you that opportunity.
Who We're Looking For
We care much more about commitment, character, initiative, and belief in the mission than about a particular degree or résumé.
You may be a good fit if you:
Care deeply about education and opportunity for children in poor communities of the world.
Want your volunteer time to have real purpose.
Are comfortable taking initiative rather than waiting for instructions.
Can organize projects and follow through on commitments.
Are willing to learn fundraising and participate organically.
Are comfortable communicating with people from different countries and cultures.
Want to grow as a leader while helping an organization grow with you.
Understand that meaningful nonprofit work sometimes means doing the unglamorous things necessary to keep a mission moving.
Nonprofit, fundraising, international development, project management, communications, or leadership experience is helpful—but none is required if you bring the right commitment and willingness to learn.
The Commitment
This is a volunteer position.
We understand that our volunteers have careers, families, and lives outside Dear Future. We are not looking for someone to treat this like a 40-hour-a-week job.
We are looking for someone who can make a consistent, long-term commitment to the organization and who wants their responsibility to grow as their relationship with Dear Future grows.
Being in the Dallas–Fort Worth area is strongly preferred because we would like the Deputy Director to have opportunities to work directly with our Executive Director, participate in local outreach and fundraising, and become part of Dear Future's leadership presence in North Texas.
