MASTER'S THESIS RESEARCHER – EARTH OBSERVATION & AI
EarthTech-AI | Master's Thesis / Research Internship
Build the next generation of Earth intelligence.
EarthTech-AI is building AI-powered geospatial intelligence systems that combine satellite imagery, environmental data, weather data and machine learning to understand changes happening on Earth.
We are looking for a Master's student who wants to conduct their thesis on a real-world Earth observation and AI problem while working closely with our technical team.
This is an opportunity to take an academic research question from satellite data → experimentation → validation → working prototype.
THE ROLE
As a Master's Thesis Researcher, you will work on an applied research problem in Earth observation, remote sensing, geospatial AI or environmental intelligence.
Potential research areas include:
• Multimodal satellite intelligence
• Wildfire detection and monitoring
• Agricultural crop monitoring
• Crop stress and yield estimation
• Flood and waterlogging detection
• Environmental change detection
• Multi-sensor satellite data fusion
• Satellite-based risk intelligence
• Geospatial foundation models
• Remote sensing + machine learning
• Satellite imagery + weather data analytics
WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Define and investigate a research question relevant to EarthTech-AI
• Conduct literature review and establish the research gap
• Work with Sentinel, Landsat, MODIS, VIIRS and other Earth observation datasets
• Process optical, multispectral, thermal and/or SAR imagery
• Build geospatial data pipelines and analytical workflows
• Develop and evaluate machine-learning or deep-learning approaches
• Combine satellite imagery with weather, terrain and environmental datasets
• Design experiments and establish appropriate validation methods
• Analyse results and document findings
• Develop a research prototype demonstrating the approach
• Present findings to the EarthTech-AI technical team
• Produce a Master's thesis suitable for academic evaluation
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
• Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics, GIS, Earth Observation, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences or a related field
• Strong interest in Earth observation and geospatial technology
• Understanding of remote sensing fundamentals
• Python programming experience
• Familiarity with raster and vector geospatial data
• Experience with QGIS, ArcGIS or equivalent
• Ability to conduct independent technical research
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to communicate technical findings clearly
GOOD TO HAVE
• Rasterio, GeoPandas, GDAL, Shapely
• Sentinel-1 / Sentinel-2
• Landsat / MODIS / VIIRS
• SAR or thermal remote sensing
• NDVI, NDWI, NBR and other spectral indices
• PyTorch or TensorFlow
• Computer vision
• Transformers / foundation models
• Time-series analysis
• AWS or Google Cloud
• Git/GitHub
• Previous satellite or geospatial research project
WHAT YOU WILL GET
• A real-world research problem rather than a purely academic exercise
• Access to relevant Earth observation and geospatial datasets
• Technical mentorship from an industry team
• Exposure to satellite applications, AI and geospatial product development
• Opportunity to develop a research prototype
• Opportunity to contribute to EarthTech-AI's products and research
• Potential opportunity for future employment based on performance and company requirements
THESIS STRUCTURE
Research Question → Literature → Satellite Data → Methodology → AI/Analytics → Validation → Results → Prototype → Thesis
The university will remain responsible for academic supervision and assessment. EarthTech-AI will provide the industry problem, technical context and industry mentorship.
Remote/hybrid arrangements may be considered depending on the thesis requirements and project.
