About The Role
The Application Support Engineer at USAA plays a vital role within the Production Management organization, serving as a Tier 2 (L2) technical support resource. This position is responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, incident resolution, and operational support for critical business applications and services across the enterprise technology landscape. The role requires close collaboration with teams such as the Availability Command Center (ACC), Tier 1 Operations, Application Engineering, Infrastructure, and external vendors to ensure service stability and performance. The Application Support Engineer investigates and resolves issues related to application performance, system alerts, batch processing failures, integration problems, middleware issues, and production incidents that impact business operations. This position offers a dynamic work environment, with a requirement to be in the office four days a week, based in San Antonio, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this role, emphasizing the importance of local candidates or those willing to commute.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience, typically four years or more. A fundamental understanding of programming languages and technologies such as Java, Swift, Objective-C, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL, Go, Python, and Mainframe technologies including COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, IMS, MQ, and z/OS is essential. Experience with enterprise monitoring and observability tools like Splunk, Dynatrace, Datadog, New Relic, Grafana, AppDynamics, or Azure Monitor is highly desirable. The ability to analyze logs, traces, metrics, and application performance data to identify issues is crucial. Familiarity with containerization platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker, and microservice architectures, along with understanding API-driven integration technologies, is also important. Proficiency with operational platforms such as ServiceNow, Jira, and Confluence, and knowledge of incident, problem, change, event, and knowledge management processes are required to succeed in this role.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and implement technical solutions aligned with business objectives, ensuring scalability and sustainability.
Write, maintain, and enhance code to deliver new features and system improvements, supporting ongoing product development.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues and production incidents promptly to maintain system reliability and performance.
Analyze systems and operational processes to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and operational excellence.
Define technical specifications, standards, and requirements that underpin robust application architecture.
Follow established Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) practices, including requirements gathering, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
Monitor risk factors associated with business activities, ensuring compliance with organizational risk and security standards.
