Founding Engineer, Agent Systems

ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a founding engineering role at a healthtech marketplace focused on making affordable international medical care accessible to patients who need it. You will own and build the core agent infrastructure, the orchestration layer, tool integrations, retrieval systems, and evaluation pipelines, that powers both patient-facing and internal operations. It is a systems and infrastructure role at the heart of a small, senior team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design and implement the orchestration layer for multi-step agentic workflows across clinic operations and internal processes.
- Integrate external tools and APIs into agent systems, ensuring reliable tool calling and robust error handling.
- Build retrieval and evaluation infrastructure to measure and continuously improve agent reliability and accuracy.
- Identify recurring manual workflows and ship automation systems to eliminate them end-to-end.
- Monitor agent performance in production and iterate on system design based on real-world behavior.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Demonstrated experience building agent or LLM systems through personal projects, research, open-source contributions, or professional work, orchestration, tool integrations, RAG, and evals all count.
- Experience designing and implementing agent orchestration systems or multi-step agentic workflows.
- Experience integrating tools, APIs, or external services into agent pipelines.
- Experience building or working with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems.
- Experience designing evaluation frameworks or monitoring systems for agent reliability.
- Strong CS and math fundamentals, shown through academic performance, competition experience, or fast self-directed learning. Recent graduates and self-taught builders are welcome.
- Comfortable working in TypeScript; familiarity with Vercel and agent orchestration frameworks is a plus.
- An automation instinct: you naturally spot manual work and think in systems.
- Experience in early-stage startup environments, healthcare or regulated industries, prompt engineering, or open-source AI research is a bonus but not required.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Base salary: $150,000 to $220,000 annually, plus meaningful founding-team equity. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
LOCATION
On-site, five days per week in San Francisco, California.
