The Role
We are hiring a Senior Elixir Engineer to build and scale the backend services behind the Level All platform. The backend is Elixir and Phoenix on PostgreSQL. It exposes REST APIs to Vue 3 web frontends and to native iOS and Android apps. This is a backend role: you will not write frontend or mobile code. As a senior engineer, you will lead projects and mentor other engineers.
As more students use the platform, you will also fix bugs, pay down technical debt, strengthen automated testing, and reduce complexity.
This is a full-time remote role. You must live in one of the states listed under Additional information.
What you'll do
Partner with a frontend engineer to take each project from planning to production. You own the backend and the API contract; they own the UI.
Write the implementation plan for each feature and break it into tickets for your own work.
Design, build, and maintain Elixir and Phoenix services used by hundreds of thousands of students.
Design REST APIs consumed by Vue web applications and by iOS and Android apps.
Ship features with Engineering, Product, and Design that make the platform more engaging for students and more valuable for partner schools and organizations.
Lead projects, shape backend patterns and standards, and mentor other engineers.
Improve performance, reduce complexity, address technical debt, and keep the system scaling as the user base grows.
Take part in code review, architecture discussions, and process improvements.
How we work
Teams of two. Each project is delivered by a backend engineer and a frontend engineer working together. You plan, build, and ship the feature as a team.
You plan your own work. For each feature, you write the implementation plan and break it into Linear tickets, then build against those tickets.
Sprints and a daily standup. We work in sprints, with a short standup each day.
Every change is reviewed. Code review is required on every pull request. CI and our test coverage standards must pass before merge.
Tools. Linear for planning, GitHub for code, Slack for chat, and Gather for engineering meetings.
AI tooling. Level All provides OpenAI and Anthropic subscriptions for engineering work.
Requirements
5+ years working with Elixir in production.
A solid understanding of OTP.
Experience designing and building REST APIs, including APIs consumed by both web and mobile clients.
Solid PostgreSQL knowledge.
Experience building and scaling systems as usage grows.
A strong appreciation for automated tests and a testing culture.
A product mindset, driven by helping users.
Ownership of your work from planning through production. When you need an answer, you go find it rather than wait for someone to bring it to you.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, and experience working on a remote team.
Nice to have
10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
Experience in edtech or on platforms that serve students and educators.
Experience with background job processing (Oban or similar).
Experience handling sensitive personal data under privacy rules such as FERPA
A track record of mentoring engineers.
Experience in a startup environment.
Compensation and benefitsThe annual total compensation for this position is expected to be between $155,000 and $175,000. Salary levels are expected to change to reflect an employee's job performance (results and impact) over time. In addition to base salary, employees at Level All are typically eligible for a comprehensive package of benefits, and successful candidates may also be eligible for stock-based compensation and/or variable pay programs based on performance relative to goals and targets.
