Staff Backend Engineer, Exposure Management

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Backend Engineer, Exposure Management based in United States.
This is a senior backend engineering role providing technical leadership for the evolution of an attack surface management product into a next-generation Exposure Management platform. You will own technical direction across services while helping bridge complex legacy systems with a modern platform. The role combines hands-on backend development, distributed systems architecture, migration leadership, and cross-team technical alignment. You will build and scale real-time streaming services that leverage large datasets to help customers identify and reduce security exposures. You will also mentor engineers, strengthen engineering standards, and guide architectural decisions across the team. Accountabilities
Serve as the technical lead for the Exposure Management team, defining technical direction, architecture, and system design practices.
Lead the migration of legacy attack surface management capabilities onto a modern Exposure Management platform while balancing existing customer commitments with long-term technical goals.
Own backend services end to end, including resolving complex legacy behavior and ensuring reliable interoperability between legacy and new systems.
Design, build, and evolve large-scale, real-time streaming services that process and leverage extensive datasets.
Drive technical alignment across shared systems, improving scalability, coordination, reliability, and engineering effectiveness.
Lead architecture reviews and promote maintainable, high-quality software through strong engineering practices, testing, CI, linting, and appropriate design patterns.
Mentor engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence, thoughtful architecture, and continuous improvement.
Apply AI and LLM technologies to improve engineering productivity, automate workflows, and enhance capabilities within the Exposure Management platform.
Partner across teams to identify systemic gaps, document technical decisions, and drive solutions from initial concept through implementation.
Requirements
10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years working extensively with Go.
Strong understanding of how the Internet works, including technologies and concepts such as DNS record types, WHOIS, and certificate Subject Alternative Names (SANs).
Deep experience designing and building horizontally scalable distributed systems with high availability and fault tolerance.
Hands-on experience with service-oriented and microservice architectures, including technologies such as gRPC, REST, Kubernetes, and GCP.
Experience working with event-driven architectures, ideally using GCP Pub/Sub or similar messaging technologies.
Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar legacy systems, reverse-engineer existing behavior, and resolve complex issues with minimal disruption.
Strong technical design, documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across teams.
Positive, action-oriented approach to ambiguous technical problems, with a preference for iterative and pragmatic solutions.
Strong commitment to maintainable software, automated testing, CI/CD quality controls, linting, code complexity management, and established engineering patterns.
Experience leading product migrations or platform consolidations while supporting legacy customers and developing new capabilities in parallel is a plus.
Interest in using AI and LLM technologies to improve engineering velocity, automation, and product experiences, combined with sound judgment around responsible adoption.

Base salary, equity, and eligibility for bonus compensation.
For U.S. locations, the published base salary ranges from $172,000–$216,000 USD in most locations and $198,000–$233,000 USD in designated high-cost areas; remote compensation is localized based on employee work location.
