Senior Backend Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (SDE-2/3) to work directly with the founders on one of our most important new product areas, AI Governance and Agent Security. Enterprises are rapidly adopting AI agents, copilots, MCP servers, AI gateways, and autonomous workflows. Traditional IAM and security tools were not designed to understand what these agents can access, what data they interact with, or what actions they take. We are building the control plane to discover, govern, monitor, and enforce how AI interacts with enterprise data and systems.
Responsibilities:
Build backend systems for our AI Governance and Agent Security platform.
Build an inventory and relationship graph across agents, models, MCP servers, tools, identities, and enterprise data.
Design policy engines controlling what agents can access and which actions they can perform.
Build integrations with MCP gateways, AI gateways, agent frameworks, APIs, and SDKs.
Process high-volume runtime events, including prompts, tool calls, data access, and agent actions.
Correlate AI activity with Matters' sensitive-data classification and lineage context.
Build real-time detection and enforcement for risks such as data leakage, excessive permissions, unsafe tool usage, and abnormal agent behavior.
Design scalable APIs, event pipelines, distributed services, and enterprise-grade control-plane infrastructure.
Work directly with the founders, product, security research, and engineering teams on architecture and product direction.
Requirements:
4-6 years of strong backend engineering experience.
Strong experience with Go, Java, Python, C++, or similar languages.
Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, databases, APIs, and event-driven architectures.
Experience building scalable backend platforms processing large volumes of events.
Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, RBAC/ABAC, and policy systems.
Experience with Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, and production distributed systems.
Ability to take ambiguous product problems and independently drive them from design to production.
Strong product thinking: you care about what should be built, not just how to implement it.
