Major Responsibilities:
Provides expert consultation, leadership, and oversight to all market area sites related to stroke program operations including Stroke Center certifications, quality of care management, and peer review. Proactively address internal and external environment to ensure highest quality of stroke care is being provided at all market area sites.
Responsible for directing the operations of stroke center(s) including integrating operational and clinical management, providing a full continuum of stroke care. Develop service strategies to achieve and maintain national benchmarks and best practices for stroke patients.
Maintains and promotes effective relationships with and between each stroke center. Acts as a liaison between stroke coordinators and administrative and medical leadership. Facilitates and coordinates local stroke committees.
Oversee the Comprehensive/Primary Stroke Center certification in collaboration with the Director, Stroke Quality staff, and Stroke Program Medical Director. This includes oversight of submission of applications, reports, action plans and coordination of onsite certification visits.
Ensures current clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are incorporated into the care of the acute stroke patient. Partners with the Stroke Program Medical Director, nursing leadership and other hospital leaders to incorporate CPGs into refinement of acute stroke response algorithms, review of order sets, care plans and policy/procedures. Establishes annual stroke program goals, in collaboration with the Stroke Program Medical Director and the Core Stroke Committee. This includes development, implementation, and evaluation of strategies to achieve the annual goals.
Co-chairs site-based stroke committees with key stroke team members. Supports and ensures committees complete all assignments. Coordinates and facilitates quarterly site stroke steering committees. Participates and supports system stroke Practice and System Stroke Education committees. Acts as a liaison between the stat/stroke responders, ED personnel, Inpatient units, stroke NPs, Aurora Neuroscience Innovation Institute clinic and hospital- based stroke program.
Collaborates with Stroke Program Medical Director and Stroke Quality team to establish the quality improvement plans. Oversee improvements in stroke quality outcomes/measures. Reports quality data to the Quality and Safety Council annually. Analyzes stroke data and facilitates corrective action. This includes reviewing and revising tools used for rounding, concurrent review and tracers.
Provides input, direction and expertise in the development, application, and evaluation of orientation and continuing education programs. Coaches staff to assist in identification of their goals to advance practice and career advancement. Develop a plan with employees for achievement of identified goals. Assists personnel in areas where deficits are identified. Assists personnel in identification of areas of growth.
Coordinates/manages all resources necessary to optimally provide care. This includes the availability of staff resources, patient educational supplies, and stroke office supplies. Responsible for effectively managing resources through systems management, carefully coordinating system issues to assure optimal patient care. Facilitates research-based nursing by creating an environment that encourages the utilization of research in practice; uses research in decision-making to maintain quality, cost and customer service; and assures the integration of research in congruence with departmental, organizational, regional and system strategic goals.
Provides expert clinical advice to the multidisciplinary team in designing collaborative teaching plans/programs and in planning/providing patient/family education and discharge planning including wellness and health maintenance within designated specialty. Coordinates community and EMS educational offerings per regulatory guidelines and community needs.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and
Certified Stroke Registered Nurse (SCRN) certification issued by the American Board of Neuroscience Nurses (ABNN) needs to be obtained within 2 years, and
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Education Required:
​​ Master's Degree in Nursing or related field.
Experience Required:
​​Typically requires 5 years of experience in stroke/neurosciences nursing and progressive leadership in nursing, as well as experience with program coordination, project management and working with regulatory and accreditation requirements. Includes 1 year of supervisory experience in stroke/neurosciences.
