ROLE OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE
The Operational Insight & Assurance Analyst will provide independent assurance across operational performance, data and reporting within Aviation and Transport. Sitting within the Business Intelligence team, the role will act as the bridge between frontline operations, data governance and analytical reporting, ensuring that the information used to manage performance accurately reflects what is happening operationally.
The role will combine operational assurance, data validation, analytics and documentation. It will involve working directly with frontline teams as well as BI Analysts, Data Engineers and operational management to validate the full information chain from operational activity and system capture through data ingestion, transformation and final reporting.
Key Responsibilities
The Analyst will carry out operational assurance activity across Aviation and Transport, observing frontline processes and comparing what happens in practice with the information recorded in operational systems. This will include validating operational timestamps, statuses, outcomes and processes, identifying where system data does not accurately represent operational activity, and documenting any control or process weaknesses.
The role will provide independent validation of data and reporting, including source-to-target reconciliation, record-count validation, identification of missing or duplicate records, testing of business rules and calculations, and manual sample validation. The Analyst will support assurance of Power BI reporting, KPI and SLA calculations and other management information by independently reproducing key results and confirming that agreed definitions and methodologies have been applied correctly.
A key part of the role will be tracing operational events through the complete data lifecycle — from the frontline operation, through source systems, ingestion and transformation, to the final dashboard or reported result. This will allow the business to identify where information may have been lost, changed, incorrectly classified or interpreted.
The Analyst will also use data and analytics to identify trends, anomalies and areas requiring further operational investigation. Assurance activity should increasingly be risk-based and data-led, allowing the team to focus attention on areas where there is the greatest potential operational, contractual or reporting impact.
The role will support the development and maintenance of clear documentation including KPI and SLA definitions, data dictionaries, business rules, calculation methodologies, data lineage, validation procedures, QA evidence and Standard Operating Procedures. Documentation and assurance evidence should allow significant reported results to be independently understood and reproduced.
Where issues are identified, the Analyst will support root-cause analysis and corrective action, distinguishing between operational, system, data, transformation and reporting causes. They will work collaboratively with operational, BI and Data Engineering teams to implement preventative controls and improve the quality of data at source rather than relying solely on downstream correction.
Stakeholder Engagement
The role will work across frontline operations, operational management, Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, Performance, Quality and Compliance teams, as well as supporting customer, audit or regulatory requirements where appropriate. A key capability will be translating between operational and technical teams — explaining why a data issue matters operationally and, equally, why an operational process may be creating a data or reporting issue.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have strong analytical and investigative skills, excellent attention to detail and the confidence to challenge data, processes and reported results constructively. They should be comfortable working both with operational teams on the ground and with technical or analytical teams.
Experience working with operational, performance or quality data is essential, together with strong Excel capability and experience validating datasets or calculations. Experience with Power BI, SQL, Microsoft Fabric, Power Query, DAX, data modelling or data-quality frameworks would be advantageous. Aviation, transport or another regulated operational environment would also be beneficial but is not essential.
Measures of Success
Success in the role will be demonstrated through increased confidence in Business Intelligence outputs, improved reproducibility of key reporting, reduction in recurring data-quality issues, stronger documentation and data lineage, effective closure of assurance findings and the identification of operational or data issues before they materially affect contractual, customer, regulatory or management reporting.
