School to Work - Engineering

We are looking for a talented Engineering School-to-Work (STW) - Gear Process Technician to join our Corporate Gear Development team in Troy, Michigan. This position provides students with hands-on exposure to gear manufacturing, engineering processes, product development, and technical project support. The STW student will work closely with Gear Engineers and Gear Developers while supporting gear development, research activities, process improvements, and daily lab operations.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
Support gear development activities involving bevel, hypoid, spur, and helical gears used across Cummins products.
Assist with the design, procurement, and coordination of tooling and cutting tools required for development projects.
Track and expedite prototype and production components through internal and external manufacturing sources to support project timelines.
Support scheduling, documentation, and coordination of development, research, training, customer visits, and inspection activities within the Gear Development Lab.
Assist in analyzing gear manufacturing processes, gear geometry, and quality inspection methods.
Collaborate with engineers to support quality improvement and cost reduction initiatives.
Participate in continuous improvement projects and help develop and implement best practices.
Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment following established housekeeping and safety standards.
Assist with collecting, organizing, and reporting technical data, including preparation of technical reports and project documentation.
Utilize various computer systems and software applications to support engineering and manufacturing activities.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and product specifications.
Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams while demonstrating a positive attitude, strong communication skills, and a willingness to learn.
Work Environment:
Manufacturing and laboratory environment with varying temperatures and machinery noise levels.
Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toe shoes.
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
Occasionally lift materials up to 20 pounds.
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during designated work periods.
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
Currently pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering principles.
Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in gear manufacturing and product development.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing and laboratory environment.
Demonstrated initiative, teamwork, and eagerness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
Coursework related to manufacturing, machining, CAD, quality systems, or mechanical design.
Experience with CAD software or engineering-related applications.
Previous manufacturing, laboratory, or technical work experience.
