Through the BMHM Report and BMHM Show, we deliver trauma-informed, equity-centered journalism covering racial trauma, healthcare disparities, mental health stigma, and community healing. We amplify Black voices naming the disparities and doing the work of healing.
Role overview
We are seeking a creative, mission-driven Volunteer Graphic Designer to help bring BMHM's message to life. You will create visual content for our social media, episodes, events, and outreach campaigns, helping our community feel seen, informed, and supported. This role is ideal for a designer who wants to use their skills to make a meaningful impact on Black mental health.
Key responsibilities
• Design social media graphics for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X, including episode promotions, quotes, statistics, and awareness campaigns.
• Create flyers, posters, and digital invitations for BMHM Show episodes, events, webinars, and calls for guests.
• Design episode thumbnails, title cards, and on-screen graphics for the BMHM Report and BMHM Show.
• Develop visuals for key awareness moments, such as Black History Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, Minority Mental Health Month, Suicide Prevention Month, and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
• Create survey promotion materials, including QR code flyers, to support BMHM's impact measurement work.
• Apply BMHM's brand guidelines consistently across all materials, including logo, colors, and typography.
• Help build and maintain a library of reusable templates in Canva or similar tools.
• Design infographics that present mental health data and resources clearly and accurately.
• Collaborate with the Executive Producer, host, and outreach team to meet content deadlines.
• Follow trauma-informed and safe messaging guidelines, especially for sensitive topics such as suicide, trauma, and abuse.
QualificationsRequired
• Experience in graphic design, through education, freelance work, personal projects, or prior volunteering.
• Proficiency in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign), or similar design tools.
• A portfolio showing your design work.
• Strong eye for layout, typography, and color.
• Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and respond to feedback.
• Reliable communication in a remote team environment.
• Commitment to BMHM's mission and to representing Black communities with dignity and care.
Preferred
• Experience designing for nonprofits, health organizations, or social impact campaigns.
• Familiarity with social media formats and best practices.
• Basic motion graphics or video editing skills for reels and short-form content.
• Understanding of accessibility in design, such as color contrast and readable text.
• Personal or professional connection to mental health advocacy.
