Born Digital is looking for an experienced Associate Director of Engineering to lead our software engineering function and help shape the future of our development organization.
Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for engineering standards, technical excellence, team leadership, and delivery quality across multiple projects. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineering leader who can balance strategic direction with technical execution.
🔧 What You'll Do
✅ Lead and develop Technical Architects and Software Engineers
✅ Establish and enforce engineering standards, quality practices, and definition of done
✅ Drive technical excellence, maintainability, and consistency across all projects
✅ Partner with Delivery and Digital Solutions teams to ensure engineering commitments are realistic and achievable
✅ Own engineering hiring, performance management, growth, and career development
✅ Oversee technology adoption, engineering capability planning, and technical readiness
✅ Guide AI-assisted development practices and engineering governance
✅ Stay close to the code through reviews, technical spikes, and critical-path problem solving
💻 What We're Looking For
✔ 10+ years of software engineering experience
✔ 4+ years leading engineering teams, senior engineers, architects, or technical leads
✔ Strong expertise in PHP, Laravel, React, and modern JavaScript technologies
✔ Proven experience setting and maintaining engineering standards across multiple teams
✔ Strong people leadership, coaching, hiring, and performance management experience
✔ Experience leading remote and distributed engineering teams
✔ Hands-on technical capability with strong architectural decision-making skills
✔ Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Nice to Have
⭐ Experience with Astro, Payload CMS, or similar headless CMS platforms
⭐ Experience leading legacy modernization and replatforming initiatives
⭐ Engineering capability roadmap development
⭐ Engineering career framework and promotion design
⭐ Experience managing DevOps vendors, tooling, and engineering budgets
⭐ Agency or client-services engineering leadership experience
