About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Overview
Handshake is seeking experienced Public Policy PhDs to support AI research through flexible, hourly contract work. This is not a traditional public policy research or academic role. Instead, you'll apply your expertise in public policy, governance, regulation, and policy analysis to evaluate AI-generated content, provide structured feedback, and help improve how AI understands complex policy issues, public institutions, and evidence-based decision-making.
This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that can be done alongside your primary employment.
Who This Is For
This opportunity is designed for professionals with advanced expertise in the analytic side of public policy, including those who are:
University professors or faculty in Public Policy, Economics, or closely related fields
Postdoctoral researchers in Public Policy or closely related fields
Senior PhD students or candidates (typically ABD or 3rd year and beyond) at reputable institutions
This is not a traditional full-time role. You'll apply once and, if qualified, be considered for part-time, project-based work as new projects become available.
Qualifications
We're looking for candidates with:
A PhD (completed) or advanced PhD candidacy (3rd year or beyond, with coursework completed) in Public Policy, Economics, or a closely related field from a reputable institution
A record of research output, such as peer-reviewed publications, working papers, or conference presentations
Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Regulatory design
Applied welfare economics and welfare analysis
Market design
Enforcement and compliance design
Policy mechanism analysis
Public goods and collective provision design
Policy instrument design
Social protection and redistribution design
Second-best policy design
Robustness analysis of policy conclusions
Strong analytical and research skills, with experience evaluating complex policy problems formally and rigorously
Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and follow detailed project guidelines
