Staff Android Engineer

About the Role
American Eagle Outfitters is seeking a Staff Android Engineer to serve as a technical and architectural leader for its Android platform.
This is a hands-on architecture role for an engineer who can define platform strategy, establish scalable application architecture, guide technology decisions, mentor senior engineers, and influence technical direction across the organization.
Strong Android architecture experience is imperative.
The position also includes responsibility for incorporating AI-assisted engineering workflows and agent infrastructure into the development environment.

Key Responsibilities
Android Architecture
• Define scalable, modular, testable Android architecture.
• Establish architectural standards using patterns such as Clean Architecture and MVI.
• Define dependency-injection, networking, state-management, and application-layer strategies.
• Guide migration toward Jetpack Compose while managing interoperability with legacy XML.
• Evaluate Kotlin Multiplatform for shared business logic where appropriate.
Technical Leadership
• Establish the Android technical roadmap.
• Advise leadership on technical risk, architectural decisions, and technical debt.
• Mentor Senior Android Engineers.
• Establish engineering standards and security practices.
• Author Technical Design Documents.
AI Engineering
• Define AI-assisted development workflows.
• Configure or architect Model Context Protocol servers.
• Develop strategies for AI agents and custom engineering skills.
• Integrate agent-driven engineering capabilities into Android development workflows.
Quality & Testing
• Own production quality without relying on a dedicated manual QA organization.
• Establish automated and manual testing expectations.
• Ensure code is production-ready at commit.

Requirements
• 8+ years of Android engineering experience.
• 3+ years operating in an architecture or technical-leadership capacity.
• Deep Kotlin expertise.
• Expert-level Android architecture and system-design experience.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management ability.
• AI development workflow and MCP integration experience.
