Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)
About The Role
What if your expertise in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models — exposing the gaps in their physical reasoning and helping ensure they respect the fundamental laws of the universe.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for serious scientists. No AI background required — just deep domain mastery and a rigorous, analytical mind.
Organization: Alignerr
Type: Hourly Contract
Location: Remote
Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
Design PhD-level physics problems — craft advanced, open-ended problems requiring multi-step reasoning, mathematical derivation, and deep physical intuition across topics like quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics
Author rigorous ground-truth solutions — produce step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit conversion, and logical step is airtight
Audit AI-generated physics — evaluate model outputs for physical consistency, identifying where AI "hallucinates" results that violate first principles such as conservation of energy or momentum
Refine AI reasoning — provide structured, expert feedback to improve how models apply physics-informed constraints, boundary conditions, and governing equations
Document failure modes — systematically record where and how AI reasoning breaks down, contributing to research-grade benchmarks used by leading AI labs
Who You Are
PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
Deep command of the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
Uncompromising attention to detail — units, scientific notation, and logical proof structure matter to you
Self-directed and reliable when working independently on technical tasks
No prior AI or machine learning experience required
Nice to Have
Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for technical content
Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
Background in research-level benchmarking or academic problem design
