About the Role
Respondus is seeking a Senior Software Developer to join its fully remote engineering team. This is a hands-on role for an experienced developer who can contribute across the technology stack, including backend services, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and web interfaces.
Working closely with the Principal Software Engineer and other developers, you’ll help build and maintain reliable software that supports secure online assessments at scale. The role involves solving complex technical problems, improving existing systems, and contributing to future architecture while maintaining high standards for performance, security, and software quality.

Key Responsibilities
•Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain production-quality software across backend services, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and web interfaces.
•Build scalable and secure services that support the company's online exam integrity platform.
•Contribute across the technology stack, moving between different system components as project needs evolve.
•Maintain and improve established codebases while identifying opportunities to modernize systems and architecture.
•Work with cloud infrastructure to support application reliability, observability, scalability, and performance.
•Apply security best practices to protect sensitive data and maintain the integrity of online assessments.
•Design and maintain relational database structures and data models.
•Use AI tools to assist with software design, development, code review, and maintenance of complex systems.
•Collaborate with the Principal Software Engineer and fellow developers on technical decisions, implementation, and delivery.
•Take ownership of software features from initial design through deployment, maintenance, and ongoing improvement.
•Balance competing priorities while maintaining code quality, reliability, and delivery standards.
Required Qualifications
•At least 7 years of experience building and delivering production-quality software.
•Strong backend development skills, including the ability to design scalable, secure services and APIs.
•Solid frontend development skills and an understanding of clean, intuitive user experiences.
•Experience working with established codebases and identifying opportunities for system improvements.
•Experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS, and building reliable, observable, scalable systems.
•Understanding of security best practices and systems where trust, integrity, and data protection are critical.
•Ability to work across the software stack and adapt to different technical challenges.
•Experience with relational databases and thoughtful data modeling.
•Experience using AI tools to support software design, development, review, and maintenance.
•Familiarity with Linux-based environments and modern software development workflows.
•Strong foundations in computer science and software design principles.
•Demonstrated ownership of significant software components from design through deployment and iteration.
•Ability to work effectively in a small, agile engineering team while managing multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
•Experience building or operating high-scale SaaS platforms.
•Advanced experience designing and scaling systems on AWS.
•Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks and development tools.
•Experience with video, monitoring, or real-time systems.
•Mobile application development experience.
•Experience working with remote or distributed teams.
•AWS or other relevant cloud certifications.
