Product Development & Quality Coordinator
Canadian-made healthcare products, product quality and project delivery
Location: Ontario—hybrid, with regular supplier, production and customer-site activity
Employment: Full-time, permanent
About Medirex
Medirex Systems Inc. is a Canadian-owned healthcare company with more than 50 years of experience supporting patient identification and hospital workflows. Each year, our products help healthcare providers safely identify millions of patients across Canada.
Our portfolio includes patient-identification wristbands, clinical labels, printers, barcode scanners and mySPOT digital patient-engagement solutions. We are expanding our Canadian-made product portfolio and strengthening the systems used to define, test, manufacture and support our products.
The opportunity
Medirex is seeking a hands-on Product Development & Quality Coordinator to move priority product and quality initiatives from requirements through testing, production readiness and commercialization.
This is not a purely administrative role. The successful candidate will work directly with suppliers, production partners, customers and the Medirex team to develop products, investigate quality concerns, coordinate testing and establish practical finished-product quality controls.
Medirex currently has production specifications and considerable product knowledge, but we are building a more complete and documented system for finished-product QC, verification, supplier quality and clinical-use evaluation. This person will play an important role in creating that foundation.
The initial focus will be wristbands and clinical labels, including converting externally sourced wristbands to Canadian-made alternatives, improving our current ACB/ThermaSoft wristband, commercializing the label program developed with William Osler Health System, and creating repeatable quality and product-development procedures.
Key responsibilitiesProduct development and Canadian manufacturing
Translate customer and market requirements into product briefs, specifications, test plans, timelines and action lists.
Coordinate samples, prototypes, material evaluations, factory trials, testing, customer evaluations and production-readiness reviews.
Support the development of Canadian-made laser and thermal wristbands, including a softer version of the current ThermaSoft wristband.
Maintain a SKU-by-SKU plan for replacing externally sourced wristbands with validated Canadian-made products.
Coordinate product-development activity with material suppliers, printers, converters and production partners.
Ensure new products have approved specifications, packaging requirements, quality controls and supporting documentation before commercial release.
Product quality and testing
Help establish Medirex’s finished-product QC program for wristbands, labels and related products.
Document current specifications, production controls, known failures, customer expectations and missing quality evidence.
Develop practical, risk-based test methods and measurable acceptance criteria.
Coordinate testing for print quality, barcode scanability, adhesion, abrasion, chemical and moisture exposure, durability, closure integrity, comfort, wear time, printer settings and scanner compatibility, as applicable.
Establish incoming, in-process and finished-product inspection requirements, including sampling, approved reference samples, retained samples and lot-release records.
Investigate non-conformances and customer complaints using root-cause analysis and corrective and preventive action.
Coordinate supplier corrective actions and confirm that changes are effective before issues are considered closed.
Recommend that a product, production run or shipment be held when approved quality or traceability requirements may not be met.
Clinical labels and print-and-scan solutions
Organize the Osler clinical-label program into controlled SKUs, specifications, materials, artwork, adhesives, packaging and inspection requirements.
Consolidate existing hospital test results and identify any additional testing required before wider commercialization.
Create a repeatable process for adapting successful label products to additional hospitals.
Coordinate compatibility testing among wristbands, labels, ribbons, printers and scanners.
Work with Medirex’s printer, scanner and service partners to evaluate and document complete patient-identification solutions.
Quality systems and ISO preparation
Develop and maintain controlled procedures, forms, records, approvals and revision histories.
Support procedures covering product development, verification, supplier quality, change control, inspection, complaints, corrective action, traceability and training.
Collect evidence that procedures are being followed and follow up on incomplete corrective actions.
Support QMS gap assessments, internal reviews and preparation for future ISO certification.
Work with external quality, laboratory and ISO specialists when technical expertise or independent testing is required.
Project coordination and new opportunities
Maintain project schedules, milestones, action logs, risks, decisions and weekly progress reports.
Research complementary product opportunities involving patient identification, labels, printers, scanners and related healthcare workflows.
Prepare concise opportunity assessments covering customer need, technical feasibility, commercial potential, risks and recommended next steps.
Coordinate selected mySPOT customer projects after initial product-quality priorities are under control.
Escalate delays, conflicting priorities and quality concerns early, together with a recommended course of action.
What we are looking for
Three to five years of relevant experience in quality, manufacturing, validation, product development, supplier quality, commercialization or project coordination.
Experience creating or working within quality-management systems, controlled documentation and standard operating procedures.
Practical knowledge of CAPA, non-conformance management, root-cause analysis, change control and risk assessment.
Experience developing or coordinating product tests, validation protocols or finished-product inspection requirements.
Strong project discipline, including timelines, milestones, action tracking, risk management and reliable follow-through.
Strong written communication and the ability to produce clear specifications, procedures, test records and status reports.
Comfort working directly with suppliers, factory personnel, technical partners, customers and senior decision-makers.
An evidence-driven, hands-on working style and the ability to create useful structure without unnecessary bureaucracy.
Relevant education in engineering, quality, manufacturing, operations, project management, healthcare technology or a related discipline.
Additional assets
Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 17025, GMP or another controlled quality environment.
Experience with labels, adhesives, printing, converting, packaging, medical products, wristbands, printers or barcode scanners.
Experience supporting hospital, healthcare-technology or enterprise-customer projects.
Lean, Six Sigma, quality, validation or project-management training.
Familiarity with SAP, Salesforce, PowerApps or other business and workflow systems.
What success looks like
During the first 90 days, the successful candidate will establish a clear inventory of active product and quality work, organize the essential product-development and QC records, and create verification plans for Medirex’s priority wristband and label products.
Within the first year, Medirex expects to have:
At least one additional validated Canadian-made wristband in production or controlled customer evaluation.
Documented finished-product QC operating for priority wristbands and clinical labels.
A repeatable commercialization process for the Osler label platform.
Consistent product specifications, test evidence, approved reference samples and supplier-quality records.
Practical quality-system procedures supporting Medirex’s longer-term ISO objectives.
Clear, reliable project reporting and faster closure of product and quality issues.
Medirex Systems Inc. is committed to an inclusive and accessible recruitment process. Accommodation is available upon request for candidates participating in any stage of the recruitment process.
