Key Responsibilities
Own the team's day-to-day operating rhythm, including priorities, queue health, resource allocation, standups, escalation paths, and SLA performance.
Manage and develop a team of experienced payroll operations specialists through coaching, regular feedback, performance management, and career development.
Maintain visibility into team performance and identify risks, bottlenecks, and emerging trends before they escalate.
Partner with the team's senior subject matter expert to turn technical expertise into repeatable processes, documentation, and expanded team capability.
Manage complex operational escalations and coordinate appropriate technical or cross-functional partners when deeper expertise is required.
Collaborate closely with leadership across Support, Filing, Tax Operations, Product, and R&D on cross-functional matters.
Serve as a strategic partner to the department head regarding team strategy, staffing, performance metrics, and operational decisions.
Required Qualifications
4 to 6+ years of experience in operations, technical support, support operations, client service, or a similarly execution-heavy environment.
Background working in a startup or high-growth company environment.
Track record of formal people management, including hiring, managing team growth, coaching performance, and organizing teams around shared metrics.
Experience directly managing a team, setting clear standards for outcomes, and guiding how work is executed.
Strong operational judgment with the ability to assess competing priorities, capacity constraints, SLAs, customer impact, and risk to make decisive operational decisions.
Strong communication skills with the ability to translate between team-level details and leadership-level framing for different audiences.
Ability and drive to gain fluency in a specialized technical domain on the job, with comfort managing team members who may initially possess deeper subject matter expertise.
A demonstrated bias toward building durable systems and improving underlying processes when recurring issues arise.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with payroll or payroll tax.
Experience in fintech, payments, financial operations, or another regulated or technically complex domain.

The role can be performed remotely, on a hybrid schedule, or based in-office in New York City or San Francisco.
