Role overview
The position will provide technical engineering support to 4 Pillars’ construction management and consulting activities.
Initially, the majority of work will involve civil infrastructure projects delivered by RCC Civil, including road construction, subdivisions, drainage infrastructure, culverts, reinforced concrete structures, bulk earthworks, retaining walls and water infrastructure.
Our approach is construction-led rather than purely engineering-led. We develop practical, buildable construction methodologies informed by hands-on site experience, with suitably qualified engineering consultants engaged where specialist design, verification or certification is required.
We require an engineer who understands construction processes and can translate practical concepts into accurate technical drawings, calculations, estimates and supporting documentation.
Key responsibilities
1. Temporary works design and CAD drafting
Prepare detailed AutoCAD drawings and preliminary engineering designs for formwork, falsework, concrete structures, excavation support, temporary access roads, working platforms and construction staging.
Produce plans, sections, elevations, construction details, material schedules and supporting calculations.
Prepare design packages for review and certification by appropriately qualified engineers where required.
2. Quantity surveying and estimating
Complete quantity take-offs from engineering drawings and specifications.
Prepare bills of quantities, material schedules and preliminary cost estimates.
Assist with subcontractor comparisons, procurement and variation assessments.
3. Construction methodologies
Prepare detailed construction methodologies, staging diagrams and work sequences.
Assist with construction programs, resource planning and temporary works installation procedures.
Develop technical supporting information for quality, safety and environmental documentation.
4. General project engineering support
Review IFC drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
Prepare engineering sketches, reinforcement schedules, technical RFIs and design coordination documentation.
Assist with tender preparation, alternative construction solutions and project technical submissions.
Candidate requirements
Essential
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
Minimum 5 years’ relevant engineering experience.
Advanced AutoCAD proficiency.
Demonstrated experience in civil construction, reinforced concrete or temporary works.
Strong understanding of construction methods and sequencing.
Experience with quantity surveying, estimating and engineering calculations.
Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
Good written and spoken English.
Ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines.
Highly desirable
Previous experience supporting Australian civil contractors or engineering consultancies.
Familiarity with Australian Standards, particularly AS 3610, AS 3600, AS 3798 and AS 4678.
Experience with Transport for NSW specifications and Austroads guidelines.
Experience using Civil 3D, Bluebeam, Procore or structural analysis software.
Practical experience with formwork, shoring, temporary works and reinforced concrete construction.
Ideal candidate
We are not seeking a CAD operator who simply reproduces drawings from instructions.
We want a qualified engineer who can receive a construction problem, interpret the available information, identify practical engineering solutions and produce the technical documentation required to support project delivery.
The candidate should understand that engineering solutions must be practical to construct, commercially sensible and appropriate for actual site conditions.
The ability to recognise engineering risks, identify missing information and communicate technical concerns is particularly important.
We intend to conduct interviews and a short practical technical assessment with shortlisted candidates.
