Role Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer specialising in the system-level design and development of industrial automation solutions and special-purpose machines (SPMs).
The candidate will be responsible for developing automation concepts, designing complete mechanical systems, selecting appropriate mechanisms and components, and translating concepts into manufacturing-ready designs. The role requires an understanding of how individual mechanical components work together as a complete machine, along with practical knowledge of manufacturing processes, vendor coordination, assembly, and system integration.
The ideal candidate can independently take an automation requirement, develop a mechanical solution, create the complete 3D assembly and engineering drawings, and coordinate its manufacturing and implementation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Automation System Conceptualisation & Design
* Understand application requirements and develop mechanical concepts for automation systems, special-purpose machines, and robotic workstations.
* Develop complete machine layouts, mechanical architectures, functional assemblies, and operating mechanisms.
* Design machine frames, fixtures, tooling, end effectors, linear motion systems, actuators, workholding arrangements, and material-handling mechanisms.
* Select suitable mechanical components based on load, stroke, speed, accuracy, cycle time, and application requirements.
* Evaluate design feasibility, identify potential integration challenges, and optimise solutions for performance, reliability, and cost.
2. 3D CAD Modelling & Engineering
* Develop complete 3D machine assemblies using SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Creo, or an equivalent CAD platform.
* Create detailed part drawings, assembly drawings, exploded views, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation.
* Apply appropriate GD&T, tolerances, fits, material specifications, and surface-finish requirements.
* Design mechanisms and assemblies with due consideration for accessibility, serviceability, safety, and ease of assembly.
3. Design for Manufacturing & Vendor Coordination
* Convert conceptual designs into practical, manufacturing-ready engineering packages.
* Work directly with CNC machining, fabrication, sheet metal, laser cutting, welding, and other manufacturing vendors.
* Validate designs against manufacturing capabilities and resolve fabrication, fitment, and assembly issues.
* Participate in prototype development, machine assembly, testing, debugging, and design modifications.
* Take ownership of mechanical deliverables through manufacturing and final system implementation.
4. Robotics & Automation Integration
* Design mechanical interfaces for collaborative robots, industrial robotic arms, grippers, fixtures, conveyors, and peripheral equipment.
* Support integration of robotic systems with PLC-controlled equipment, sensors, actuators, and other automation components.
* Collaborate with controls and electrical engineers to ensure seamless mechanical and controls integration.
* Participate in installation, commissioning, cycle-time optimisation, and troubleshooting at customer sites.
Required Skills & Qualifications
* Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
* 2–4 years of experience in machine design, industrial automation, SPM design, or robotics system development.
* Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modelling, complex assemblies, and engineering drawing preparation.
* Practical understanding of manufacturing processes, machining, fabrication, tolerances, fits, and assembly practices.
* Ability to develop a machine concept independently and translate it into a complete mechanical design.
* Experience selecting mechanical components such as linear guides, ball screws, bearings, gearboxes, pneumatic cylinders, actuators, and motors.
* Hands-on experience coordinating with vendors and resolving real-world manufacturing challenges.
* Basic understanding of robotics, PLCs, sensors, and automation system architecture.
Preferred Experience
* Designing complete machines or automated workstations rather than individual components alone.
* Experience with robotic pick-and-place, machine tending, assembly automation, drilling, dispensing, inspection, or other automated processes.
* Exposure to cobots and industrial robots, including mechanical integration and tooling design.
* Familiarity with pneumatic and electromechanical systems, cycle-time considerations, and machine safety.
* Experience taking at least one automation project from concept through manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning.
What Success Looks Like
The candidate should be capable of taking ownership of a complete mechanical automation solution—from understanding the application and developing the concept to designing the machine, releasing manufacturing drawings, coordinating vendors, and supporting commissioning.
