Hiring: Mechanical CAD Engineer / CAD Data Specialist — Contract
Xpert Systems, Inc. is looking for an experienced Mechanical CAD Engineer / CAD Data Specialist to support a large-scale engineering data acquisition and quality-validation project.
We are building a high-quality collection of mechanical CAD models and engineering drawings for AI model and AI agent training.
This role is ideal for someone with strong hands-on experience working with mechanical parts, STEP files, manufacturing drawings and CAD model validation.
What You Will Work On
The project involves reviewing, sourcing, organizing and validating CAD data representing real mechanical components, including:
• Machined parts
• Turned parts
• Sheet-metal components
• Brackets
• Fixtures
• Plates
• Housings
• Flanges
• Other manufacturing-oriented mechanical components
The CAD models primarily need to use conventional analytic mechanical geometry, including:
• Planes
• Cylinders
• Cones
• Spheres
• Tori
• Fillets
• Chamfers
Models should represent realistic engineering parts rather than simple primitives or highly organic/freeform geometry.
CAD Model Requirements
Candidates should be comfortable evaluating mechanical CAD models against technical criteria such as:
• STEP file quality and compatibility
• Solid-body structure
• Number and complexity of faces
• Part proportions
• Feature visibility
• Holes, bosses, fillets and chamfers
• Duplicate and near-duplicate detection
• Identification of freeform/B-spline/lofted geometry
• Identification of inappropriate meshes or overly complex models
The project includes both individual parts and limited small multi-body models.
CAD + Engineering Drawing Validation
A major part of the work involves validating CAD + technical drawing pairs.
Each pair should contain:
1. A STEP model of the mechanical part
2. A fully dimensioned engineering drawing of exactly the same part
The engineer will help verify that:
• The STEP model matches the drawing
• Dimensions agree between the drawing and model
• Holes and other features match
• There are no revision mismatches
• Units are clearly specified
• Drawings contain enough information for the part to be manufactured
• Drawings are readable and technically complete
• Assembly drawings are not incorrectly paired with individual-part models
The engineering drawing should be sufficiently complete that a competent engineer or machinist could understand and manufacture the component without having to guess missing dimensions.
Data Provenance
Because these datasets may ultimately be used for commercial AI training, data provenance and licensing are important.
Candidates may also help document:
• Original source
• Source URL
• Applicable license
• Commercial-use rights
• Relationship between the CAD model and engineering drawing
Preferred Experience
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical CAD Design
Manufacturing Engineering
Machine Design
Product Design
CNC / Machining
Sheet-Metal Design
Engineering Drawings
GD&T
CAD Data Management
CAD Model QA/QC
Experience with tools such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360, Creo, CATIA, Siemens NX, FreeCAD or similar mechanical CAD platforms is valuable.
Experience working with STEP/STP files and manufacturing drawings is especially important.
Nature of the Engagement
This is initially a contract/project-based opportunity supporting a large CAD data acquisition and validation initiative.
The project potentially involves:
10,000 CAD models
plus
10,000 matched CAD + technical drawing pairs.
Because of the scale, we are interested in individuals who can not only perform CAD work but also help us develop an efficient process for sourcing, reviewing, validating and quality-controlling large volumes of engineering data.
