About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Our Vision
Integration Charter Schools is dedicated to providing innovative pathways to college that fully integrate students living with emotional challenges and others with special needs. Our vision is to reimagine what public education can be: a place where schools serve not only as centers of learning, but as hubs of opportunity and transformation for children, families and our faculty.
We believe amazing things happen when we remove obstacles and meet every child exactly where they are. Our commitment is simple but radical: we will do whatever it takes to set the standard for excellence for kids and families.
Position Summary
ICS is seeking dedicated, energetic part-time Literacy Tutors to help students prepare for and succeed on New York State English Language Arts assessments. Tutors will work with small groups and individual students to strengthen their reading comprehension, close reading of complex texts, written responses and test-taking strategies, while building the confidence and stamina students need on test day. This is an ideal role for education students and aspiring teachers who want meaningful experience in a supportive, co-taught school community.
Schedule
Day Hours
Wednesdays 1:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Saturdays 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Candidates must be available on both days, for about 9.5 hours per week.
Responsibilities
Test preparation
Prepare students for NYS ELA assessments, including the grades 3–8 state ELA tests and the ELA Regents exam.
Teach students the structure of each test: reading passages, multiple-choice questions, short constructed responses and extended essays.
Teach and practice test-taking strategies, such as annotating passages, finding text evidence, eliminating wrong answers and managing time.
Guide students in writing strong constructed responses and essays using the NYS scoring rubrics, with clear claims and evidence from the text.
Lead practice tests and timed sessions to build stamina and reduce test anxiety.
Literacy skill-building
Strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency aligned to the New York State Next Generation ELA Standards.
Reinforce classroom instruction using the ICS literacy curriculum, including EL Education and Fishtank ELA.
Use student data and assessment results to target skill gaps and track progress.
Adapt instruction for students with IEPs and English language learners, following their testing accommodations.
Communicate regularly with teachers and the program coordinator about student progress, and keep accurate attendance and session records.
Living "The Bar"
The bar is high, by design. Our work demands courage, integrity, conviction and an unwavering belief that we can and will change the trajectory for children and families. Every member of our team, including our tutors, helps hold that bar.
The Bar at ICS What it looks like for a Math Tutor
1. Leading with Love and Liberation
Believe every student can read and write powerfully, and help students walk into test day with confidence instead of fear.
2. Doing Whatever It Takes — No Excuses, No Ego
Try new approaches until a strategy clicks. Show up prepared and on time for every session.
3. Modeling Collaboration and Coherence
Use the same language, texts and strategies students see in their classrooms, and stay in close contact with their teachers.
4. Holding Ourselves and Each Other Accountable
Track practice test results, use data to adjust tutoring, and own the results.
5. Building Schools Where Belonging Is Non-Negotiable
Create a tutoring space where every student, including students with disabilities and English language learners, feels welcome, supported and capable.
Qualifications
Required
Proficiency in New York State ELA assessments and standards, including the grades 3–8 state ELA tests and the ELA Regents exam.

Strong reading and writing skills, and the ability to explain strategies clearly in more than one way.
Reliability, professionalism and availability on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Preferred
Current enrollment in, or completion of, an English education, literacy or teacher preparation program.
Experience with test preparation or scoring NYS ELA constructed responses and essays.
