The engineer will develop production firmware and system-level control functions for the thermal printer,
working closely with the thermal print mechanism, printhead, motors, sensors, electronics and
mechanical systems.
The role requires the ability to translate physical mechanism behaviour into robust embedded software
and control algorithms and to use MATLAB/Simulink for modelling, simulation, calibration and control
development.
2. Key Responsibilities
Embedded Firmware Development
Design and develop production-grade Embedded C/C++ firmware for thermal printers.
Develop printer state machines, sequencing, fault handling and recovery mechanisms.
Implement ESC/POS and printer command protocols, including text, barcode and image
processing.
Develop print-job management, buƯ er management and high-speed image/data handling.
Develop line-driver software coordinating thermal printhead strobing, paper-feed motor and print
timing.
Develop firmware for normal, high-speed, bold, image and cutter operating modes.
Develop and maintain firmware architecture, drivers and hardware interfaces.
Model-Based Development & Control
Develop system and control models using MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow.
Model printer mechanism behaviour and develop control strategies before implementation on
the target processor.
Develop and tune PID and other control algorithms for motor, media transport and thermal
control.
Develop control strategies for:
o Platen/stepper motor torque and speed
o Thermal printhead strobing and thermal management
o Auto-cutter operation
o High-speed paper/media transport
o NIP force and related closed-loop control
Perform simulation, calibration and parameter optimization.
Correlate simulation results with actual hardware performance.
Support SIL/HIL and Model-Based Development.
Use Embedded Coder or equivalent tools for production code generation where applicable. 3. Printer System Integration & Validation
Integrate firmware with the purchased thermal print mechanism, printhead, motors, sensors and
electronics.
Understand the mechanical and thermal characteristics of the print mechanism and translate
them into software/control requirements.
Optimize motor torque, speed, acceleration and deceleration profiles for high-speed printing.
Ensure stable media transport and prevent paper scrambling/slipping.
Develop printhead energy/strobing strategies for consistent print quality.
Develop cutter control, position sensing, error detection and recovery.
Perform system-level validation covering:
o Print speed
o Print quality
o Thermal performance
o Media transport
o Cutter performance
o Motor performance
o Reliability and error recovery.
Perform data-driven calibration and root-cause analysis of system-level issues.
4. System Engineering & Technical Leadership
The role goes beyond conventional firmware development and requires strong system-level engineering
capability.
Analyse and review system and software requirements.
Translate system requirements into firmware and control requirements.
Define software/hardware interfaces.
Participate in system and software architecture reviews.
Maintain requirements-to-design-to-test traceability.
Participate in design reviews and engineering quality gates.
Conduct/contribute to FMEA, defect analysis and root-cause investigation.
Work with mechanical, electronics, firmware, system engineering and validation teams.
Mentor junior firmware engineers and provide technical guidance.
5. Supplier & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with thermal print mechanism suppliers, including international suppliers.
Understand supplier mechanism specifications, motor characteristics, sensor feedback and
operating limits.
Translate supplier technical information into system and firmware requirements.
Support mechanism evaluation, prototype testing, integration and technical debugging.
