About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Machine Learning Engineering Leader to join Vanguard's dynamic team. This pivotal role involves leading a team of talented Machine Learning Engineers responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and scaling advanced AI/ML solutions that underpin our Financial Advisory Services (FAS) business objectives. The ideal candidate will partner closely with cross-functional teams—including Product Management, Data Science, Architecture, and Technology—to deliver robust, scalable, and reliable AI capabilities that meet enterprise standards for governance, security, and operational excellence. This leadership position requires a strategic thinker with a hands-on approach to end-to-end solution delivery, from architecture planning through to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement, ensuring that all solutions align with Vanguard’s mission of long-term client success.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with a preference for candidates holding a graduate degree. A minimum of eight years of relevant experience in machine learning, data engineering, or related disciplines is required, demonstrating a strong track record of leading technical teams and delivering enterprise-grade AI/ML solutions. Proven expertise in designing scalable architectures, developing production-quality models, and implementing best practices in AI/ML engineering is essential. Additionally, experience with cloud platforms, automation, and operationalization of machine learning workflows will be highly valued.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership in hiring, coaching, talent development, performance management, and compensation decisions, fostering a high-performing team aligned with Vanguard’s values and standards.
Collaborate with Enterprise, Solution, and Domain Architects to define comprehensive AI/ML solution architectures, translating strategic initiatives into actionable roadmaps, epics, and engineering workstreams.
Lead cross-functional teams across Product, Data Science, Platform, and Engineering to drive the end-to-end delivery of AI/ML solutions, ensuring alignment with business objectives and enterprise standards.
Establish and promote engineering best practices, reusable frameworks, and platform capabilities that enhance scalability, consistency, and efficiency across all AI/ML initiatives.
Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous evolution of data, feature, and model pipelines to support reliable, scalable, and maintainable AI/ML solutions.
Apply deep expertise in machine learning, statistics, optimization, and experimentation methodologies to operationalize predictive analytics and decision-support systems.
Partner with Data Science teams to evaluate data quality, feature readiness, and model inputs, ensuring successful development, validation, and deployment of models.
Drive operational excellence by implementing automation, observability, monitoring, incident management, and continuous improvement practices for production AI/ML systems.
Ensure compliance with enterprise governance, security, risk management, and model lifecycle policies, maintaining high standards for ethical AI deployment.
Engage with business and technology stakeholders to understand strategic objectives, assess opportunities, and translate complex requirements into effective technical solutions.
Support planning and prioritization processes, balancing delivery commitments with operational needs and organizational goals to achieve strategic outcomes.
Develop scalable operating models, support processes, and service standards that promote the long-term sustainability of AI/ML products and platforms.
Communicate complex technical strategies, solution recommendations, and project progress effectively to senior leadership and stakeholders.
Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to Vanguard’s innovation and growth initiatives.
