Job Summary (UX Designer - IBM Carbon Design System)
Role: UX Designer specializing in IBM Carbon Design System
Industry: Grocery (Retail client experience required)
Location: Remote (US, EST candidates only)
Duration: 12+ months
Key Responsibilities
Audit the current Figma design system library and recommend/prioritize completion plan.
Finalize and apply variable and token structures consistently across the library.
Complete styling for in-scope Carbon components utilizing Figma best practices.
Configure components for properties, variants, responsive behavior, and interactive states ensuring usability without detaching instances.
Strengthen Data Table components for data-heavy internal applications.
Design 3-5 custom components (e.g., navigation, card elements) based on identified gaps.
Collaborate with the Design System Developer to align Figma assets, tokens, naming conventions, states, and coded components.
Publish the completed Figma design library and recommend a process for future contributions (requesting, reviewing, accepting).
(If time permits) Establish or extend dark theme variables and tokens.
Required Skills & Experience
5-10 years in UX/Product Design, especially with design systems in Figma.
Experience building, extending, or maintaining substantial design systems (preferably IBM Carbon).
Advanced knowledge in variables, modes, styles, libraries, prototyping, and scalable design-token structures.
Proven ability in adapting/extending design systems (not just stand-alone product design).
Strong understanding of component anatomy, states, responsive behavior, and systematic design.
Experience designing complex, data-heavy UI components (tables, filters, forms, pagination, etc.).
Ability to create flexible, reusable Figma components.
Knowledge of accessibility requirements and their impact on design.
Ability to audit, identify gaps, and independently execute completion plans.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and maintainability.
Excellent written and verbal communication; able to explain design-system decisions to cross-functional teams.
Preferred Experience
Direct experience with IBM Carbon Design System.
Adapting open-source design systems to match organizational branding and needs.
Designing for enterprise, operational, or internal applications (web and mobile).
Understanding of design tokens, CSS variables, themes, and coded component libraries.
Direct collaboration with front-end engineers and familiarity with React.
Experience defining design-system contribution/review processes.
Creating light and dark themes using semantic variables/tokens.
Completion Criteria
Figma library is styled, connected to approved variables and tokens, published for internal use, and ready to support new web/mobile application designs.
