Internship Opportunity – Robotics Design & Development Engineer
Company: AerX Space Labs
Division: Robotics, Autonomous Systems & AI
Position: Robotics Design & Development Intern
Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Internship Duration: 3–6 Months
Eligibility: Engineering students, final-year students and recent graduates
Internship Type: Full-time / Project-based
About AerX Space Labs
AerX Space Labs is focused on developing next-generation intelligent robotic and autonomous systems, including aerial drones, quadruped robotic dogs, autonomous ground robots and underwater robotic platforms.
We are looking for highly motivated, technically capable and hands-on robotics interns who can quickly contribute to the design, development, assembly, programming and testing of real-world robotic systems.
This opportunity is intended for students who have already built robotics projects and are passionate about transforming engineering concepts into functional prototypes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Robotics Design & Mechanical Development
Design robotic structures, chassis, joints, mounting systems and mechanical assemblies.
Develop 3D CAD models using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA or equivalent tools.
Support mechanical design for quadruped robots, autonomous ground vehicles and robotic mechanisms.
Select motors, actuators, gearboxes, bearings and mechanical components.
Support 3D printing, fabrication, prototype assembly and mechanical testing.
2. Electronics & Embedded Systems
Select and integrate microcontrollers, sensors, motor drivers and communication modules.
Work with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi or NVIDIA Jetson platforms.
Integrate servo motors, BLDC motors, encoders, IMUs, LiDAR and cameras.
Assist with power distribution, battery management and electronic troubleshooting.
Develop and test embedded control systems.
3. Robotics Programming & Autonomous Navigation
Develop robotic control software using Python and C/C++.
Work with ROS/ROS 2 for robotic communication, control and navigation.
Implement motion control, locomotion, obstacle avoidance and path planning.
Support SLAM, sensor fusion and autonomous navigation.
Integrate real-time sensor data with robotic control systems.
4. AI & Computer Vision Integration
Integrate cameras and AI vision systems into robotic platforms.
Support object detection, human detection, obstacle recognition and intelligent surveillance applications.
Work with OpenCV, PyTorch, TensorFlow or YOLO-based detection systems.
Assist with deploying AI models on edge computing devices.
Support integration with Mirador AI for intelligent perimeter surveillance and automated alerts.
5. Prototype Assembly & Testing
Assemble complete robotic prototypes from mechanical and electronic components.
Perform hardware and software integration.
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical and programming issues.
Conduct controlled indoor and outdoor testing.
Document engineering designs, test results, component specifications and improvements.
Required Qualifications
Students pursuing or recently completing:
B.E./B.Tech – Robotics & Automation
Mechatronics Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electronics & Communication Engineering
Electrical & Electronics Engineering
Computer Science / Artificial Intelligence
Students from other disciplines with demonstrated robotics project experience are also welcome.
Essential Skills
Candidates should have practical experience in at least two of the following areas:
Mechanical design and CAD modelling
Robotics hardware assembly and fabrication
Embedded systems and motor control
Python, C/C++ or ROS 2
Sensors, actuators and electronic integration
Autonomous navigation or computer vision
Preferred Experience
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
Built a working robotic prototype independently or as part of a team.
Participated in robotics competitions, hackathons or university robotics clubs.
Developed quadruped robots, robotic arms, mobile robots, drones or autonomous vehicles.
Worked with 3D printing, electronics prototyping and hardware debugging.
Published robotics projects on GitHub or maintained technical project portfolios.
Previous commercial work experience is not mandatory. Demonstrated practical capability is more important than academic grades alone.
What We Expect
We are specifically looking for interns who are:
Hands-on builders, not just theoretical learners.
Capable of understanding an engineering requirement and quickly developing a functional prototype.
Comfortable assembling, programming, testing and troubleshooting hardware.
Able to work independently while collaborating with mechanical, electronics and AI teams.
Interested in contributing directly to real product development.
Disciplined about engineering documentation, safe testing and meeting project milestones.
Selection Process
Stage 1 – Project Portfolio Review
Candidates must submit photographs, videos, GitHub repositories or technical descriptions of robotics projects they have personally developed.
Stage 2 – Technical Interview
Assessment of mechanical design, electronics, embedded systems, robotics programming and troubleshooting skills.
Stage 3 – Practical Engineering Assessment
Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete a small, time-bound robotics design or programming task using accessible tools and equipment.
Stage 4 – Final Selection
Selection based on technical capability, practical experience, problem-solving skills and readiness to contribute to active projects.
Internship Benefits
Work on real-world robotics and autonomous systems.
Hands-on exposure to mechanical design, electronics, AI and robotic software development.
Opportunity to contribute to the development of AerX robotic products.
Technical mentoring and collaborative engineering experience.
Internship completion certificate based on successful participation.
Potential consideration for full-time engineering opportunities based on performance and business requirements.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit:
Updated resume.
Details of robotics projects completed.
